Announcing The UAV Guide

DIY Drones community,

We are proud to announce the launch of The UAV Guide, a centralized source of information about personal, recreational and commercial UAVs.  We aim to provide organized, easy to find practical information to help you quickly advance your knowledge about UAVs.  Here's a look at some of our first pages:

UAV Selection – How do you select which UAV to buy?  Which are the most popular UAV systems and how do they compare?

Brushless Electric Motors – How do brushless motors behave?  How can I calculate motor efficiency?  What resources are out there to help me select the best motor for my UAV?

Propellers – How do propellers behave aerodynamically?  Where can I find propeller experimental data?

First Person View (FPV) – What are the main components of an FPV system and how do I connect them?

Propulsion – What are the advantages of an electric UAV versus a gas UAV?  How do I wire up my electric propulsion system?

Be sure to visit back often, as we will be adding new content periodically.  We will announce new content through blog posts in DIY Drones, and through our Facebook page and RSS feeds.  If you have any comments or questions, or if there is content you’d like to see in the future, please contact us.

Enjoy!

  • Thank you all for your comments. There has been a very positive response to the launch. We look forward to releasing new content within a few days.

Dan: You will definitely see some useful information about those topics soon. Stay tuned!

Harry: Being that these are very specific programming topics, they do not lie within the scope of The UAV Guide at this point in time. But I would recommend that you check out hackaday.com for guides on these topics. And also to get a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or something similar and a Bus Pirate to play around.

Craig: The information on the guide is not limited to a particular product like the Ardupilot. However, we will include useful information and guides about Ardupilot and other popular UAV products.

  • Developer

    +1 on the good initiative.

How about jumping on the ardupilot wiki and putting the information there?

  • Good initiative, indeed.

  • Distributor

Looks pretty good so far with some useful information!

  • I play with code and the biggest hurdle for me is understanding various protocols like i2C, Spi and how to set them up and use them.  Timing is another issue and how to break tasks up into multiple loops.  Interrupts, registers, and using the right vectors and how to is something I would like to understand.  When to write to EEPROM and how.  Basically, I'd like to be able to read a data sheet and understand what it means when writing code.  That's a lot to ask for, but it would mean the difference between hacking minor changes and actually understanding how it goes together and customizing.

  • CADDrones.com and CAD Drones, LLC is highly interested in collaborating with you folks at The UAV Guide. Please email me at: JoshuaAllenJohnson@gmail.com if you're interested.
  • A practical theory for LQR, PID controller, how to write my own code, and how to calibrate will be awesome.

    Thanks

    Danny

  • Joe,

Right now the team is composed of an aerospace engineer and a software engineer.

We are considering all user feedback. However, at the moment editing is being done only by the team, as it would require a significant amount of time to administer if we open it for public editing. We want to keep it well organized and within it's objective.

Soon we will include an article on control theory, to get everyone started on this complex topic. From there, depending on the feedback, we'll write more in depth articles on control theory and flight automation.

We are doing this out of passion, so please spread the word!

Joe, Zheng, thanks for the comments and encouragement.
  • Thanks,a great work.

  • The web pages for The UAV Guide look pretty good so far. Who is on the team? Is it an open source project? Wiil control theory & flight automation be included? I like the idea of a well organized, onel stop reference for development and training. Thanks and good luck.
