Arduino & ossimPlanet: sweet

Hi all ..... ArduPilot and ossimPlanet, a potential sweet combo (??). What is ossimPlanet – an open source virtual earth that can easily be integrated with the Arduino board. For example, ArduPilot could potentially control ossimPlanet instantaneous through gps data output. Also, ossimPlanet allows an collaborative viewing experience through it's peer-to-peer communication sockets. Disclaimer: I have no actual experience with this (Arduino & ossimPlanet) combo. Credit goes to Tyler Mitchell's blog (spatialguru) and Massimo Di Stefano. I just see alot of other potential applications incorporating the ArduPilot with ossimPlanet. Interested in reading your thoughts? Warning: changing thought direction ... for anyone interested, it looks like OSSIM also provides impressive open source image processing tools, such as ImageLinker.

  • some work is done, now exist a PyQt interface to control OssimPlanet i'm using it to sync the ossimpanet camera with a position-panel (the connection is bidirectional : moving planet produce update in the panel and viceversa, from the panel is possible to change the ossmplanet camera position).

Using TCP is also possible to zoom to point of interset (stored in sqlite db) or add/remove raster/vector data.
Other tools are already developed, like save customized kml, log incoming data from external device/sensor etc ...
i've a simpe arduino ... i need to by an ardupilot as soon as possible to begin some dome fun :-)
  • Hi, i'm Massimo, this summer i worked on a "python interface" to send position message (lon, lat, roll, pitch, gain) or data (raster, rasterized(vector)) to ossimplanet. It works under a Gis environment (Grass or Qgis), the code can also easy re-used out of a "gis" environment.
Shoul'd be really cool to start to play around a "ground station development" based on OSSIM / ArduPilot collaboration.... a workgroup about it?
  • Mark, thanks for the invitation. A fantastic opportunity for someone in this DIY community. As a spectator I look forward to observe what exciting applications develop from a OSSIM / ArduPilot collaboration.
  • I'm from the OSSIM project, we would be very interested in working towards this. OssimPlanet is completing some significant performance enhancements that should be released within the next month. We are also implementing a number of flight simulator viewing modes that would fit well with DIY control - follow object, jump inside object, lock on target, etc. Massimo is working on a Google Summer of Code project that will enhance and document the communications interfaces to ossimPlanet for interoperability with GRASS and QGIS. If there is anyone close to Melbourne Florida that wants to experiment let us know on the OSSIM project.
  • Joseph .... I totally agree – ground station for sure. Other potential applications for DIY DRONES using ossimPlanet seem to be on-demand imagery that can be automatically geometrically corrected by using OMAR – this link makes reference to UAV and particularly Predator video feeds.
  • Would make for an interesting window on the ground station that is for sure.
I am very interested in the terrain evasion wayne garris mentioned however, that would be a very cool feature indeed.

Ossimplanet is used with great success with the cloud cap AP system it even uses the vector data to help the UAV avoid hills ect .
