No, you need more than a helicopter heading hold gyro to make an IMU or working autopilot.
  • Would appreciate any idea if this unit can be used with ArduPilot?

Okay, well it sounds like we'll soon have the right code for you. You've got relatively unique needs (you want to share one GPS with OSD and autopilot), but the next (328 chip) version should handle them.

Why not switch to 2.0/2.1? It works better.

The short answer is I'm not quite sure why your AP doesn't work all the time. It could be a bug. It could be loss of GPS lock. It could be the going into the wind reduces the plane's groundspeed to close to zero, which makes the directional vector random.

This code is less than six months old, so it's definitely a work in progress. I suggest you keep upgrading the software along with our development and the performance will get better over time.

It gets altitude from GPS. It's good to a meter or two.
  • How does ardupilot get its height AGL?

Has anyone hooked up a miniature laser altimeter to ardupilot?

    Thanks

  • Thank you Reto and Jordi. Let me look up these tips you guys suggested. Appreciate your help :)

    Tom,

Yes there's a way and is very simple, for the current sensor you can try the Sparkfun current sensor, that will give you the current scaled for 5Vs. And for the voltage you can use a power divider (only two simple resistors), somewhere in my files i have the right calculation to convert 4 cell lipos to 5Volts, with a good resolution of .01 Volts (also compatible with 2 and 3 cells), i have to find it...

You can know more about power dividers if you google it.
  • Thanks Reto for the tip. What about current sensing? Would like to monitor the current on two ducted fan engines and also hoping to correlate the current usage with the RPM of the ducted fans (i.e.trust).
  • Sorry if this was posted before: can ArduPilot be programmed to monitor voltage and current of the Lipo that runs the motor? Does this require a hardware modification like current voltage/sensing sensors? Is there anyway to avoid having to buy for example a "AttoPilot Voltage and Current Sense Breakout" board? Thank you.
