  • I won't be popular for saying it, but Kuncen is absolutely correct.

Why be angry at someone who has a different opinion? Why not consider that our views might be seen as warped or blinkered on account of the time, money and effort invested in these projects?

If Kuncen appears to be ignorant about the whole issue (and lets face it, we are all learning too), I think it would be best to take him up on his offer and compile an article about our perspective on sUAS'. This way his website is richer in balanced content and everyone can make up their own minds.

  • Hey guys, Kuncen here. I just wanted to clarify that the article was not about hobbyists building their own drones. I'm well aware that that's been going on for years. And certainly the "neighborhood nutjob" comment wasn't a reference to hobbyists (if that's how you took it).

The article was about the entrance of a fully-assembled and ready-to-use drone aircraft being marketed to people who have never used this kind of thing before, and mounted with a video camera.

I understand that you guys adhere to the laws regarding UAVs. And I'm sure you probably have codes of conduct that are probably even stricter than the laws require.

But if everybody starts buying the AR.Drone for $300 and doesn't bother to learn any of the laws or rules, the potential for misuse exists.  And if someone has bad intentions to begin with, the AR.Drone lowers that barrier to execution. You'll notice that I didn't say that anything was guaranteed to happen. I didn't make any conclusions, just suggestions. I will admit that the tone of the article reflected my own misgivings the Pandora's box that (in my opinion) may have been opened.

I stated my opinion, and you're free to disagree with me. I welcome it, in fact. I was hoping that someone would take the time to specifically point out the inaccuracies or mistakes in my article, but nobody did that. The comments were just insults and name-calling, which is kind of disappointing. I respectfully replied to the angry commenters, but received scorn in return. I certainly hope that you treat new members to your community with more sensitivity and less disdain. As Mike mentioned above, your community may have lobby strength. This issue is not going to go away, and just blowing up at anyone who raises it (instead of rationally and logically arguing against it) isn't doing your community any favors. Your energies may be better spent proactively tackling this issue and helping non-DIYers understand it, rather than taking huge offense to their perceptions of it.

  • Duane,

Thats a good way to put it. I was thinking more along the lines that stupidity and laziness should be punished.
  • When someone figuratively kicks me in the groin, I find it difficult to smile and say thanks for your expressing your opinion.

  • At worst he wants to stifle American innovation through regulation. At best he thinks UAVs should pass a criminal check and waiting period just like buying a gun. I still disagree with both.

Either way I really couldn't figure out what his goals were from reading his other writings.
  • My first overall impression regarding Kuncen's reply - I think he has a valid point regarding DIYer's response which for the most part did indeed tended to be:

unnecessarily marred by negativity . . . insulting people . . . doesn't win anyone to your point of view.

Based on membership the DIYer community potentially has lobby strength. We might have a responsible in the future to alleviate valid / invalid concerns. That being said, Kuncen's following remark . . .

the potential for misuse exists.  It was not a call for banning them, and it was not a call for stronger regulation.

    doesn't jive with earlier comment . . .

something terrible will have to happen before preventative measures are taken.

One has to wonder what preventative measures he has in mind?

  • I wrote him to be carefull with drones pointing at him with deadly paintball bullets........ he is awared now :-)
  • Kuncen, not quite how I would spell it.

    Stupidity, ignorance and paranoia.

  • Yes I have constructed a device that protects you. It is a super secret tshirt that has printed on it "MY FEARS ARE IRRATIONAL."

We guarantee you won't be attacked by a drone, and if you do, we'll kindly give you back your money!

  • anybody here watches csi. u cant judge a nutjob's skills. convo in the wrong direction. somebody working on prevention of uav attack solutions??
