I found this article which is quite a demonstration by the absurd of how when a technology (micro UAVs in this case) is beneficial to the industrial-military industry, it will get through any FAA or any other regulations. Another sign we're really under large corporations' governance.
So, in other words : develop a potentially very dangerous (privacy, invasive, weaponized, etc) application of UAV tech, and you will get a green light to do whatever you want with it even in the middle of the US; However you'd like to fly your harmless quad that carries a gopro : that's a no no - you can't fly it - forbidden - bad bad bad - too dangerous.
This would laughable if it wasn't so absurd: try to make citizens believe your IRIS or AR drone is dangerous for the sake of privacy protection (and all other arguments we hear from FAA against UAVs civilian uses), but then it's ok to spy on your citizens - everyone being a potential terrorist - do not forget that, (and on other countries of course, preferably US allies).

Unfortunately this is a true story and as long as we continue to let politicians like President Barack Obama and other democrats pick apart and fundamentally change our constitution instead of protecting it, we move closer to an extreme communist state in our country.
In case you didn't know it - and you probably didn't - Congress, with little fanfare, passed an FAA re-authorization bill that President Obama signed into law that will put 30,000 flying drones spying on Americans across U.S. cities by government.
People are already nervous about the prospect of being watched by law enforcement (and possibly the military or DHS), but our leaders employ these tools nevertheless and "we the people" are letting them.
Even the liberal news huffington post has a video news story about this although they try to legitimize the reasons for needing this to save lives.

@Oliver, lol. I like your straitghtforward style/character. l believe, in my humble opinion, that there is a valid point in that, even if the described technology seems unrealistic, the usage's intent is correct and that's where I wanted to attract people's attention with such a post (the negative perception/intents you describe were certainly not my intentions). You should not be so naive as to think that, if a technology like this would ever exist , it would never be used as described in this caricatural video. This is not being paranoid, this is just an observation of what any human society developing new technology does first: use it as weapons and/or to control people. It always has been so since humanity exists and it will not change any time soon I'm afraid (our brains did not evolve for the last 50 000 years or so, so we are basically the same cave men, with a bit more tech to play with).
Do not forget that what you think possible or not, technology speaking, is based on your beliefs/knowledge about what can or can't exist. However, who are we to pretend knowing the state of the art of certain technology domains that are developed in the hands of agencies/military departments with quasi unlimited budgets for decades: for example just think about the trillions of dollars used in american black budget programs. Take, as a concrete example and fact, the B2 or F117 stealth bombers (do you remember, in the eighties, specialists stating that it was impossible and paranoid too... ? the plane was revealed to the public more than a decade after many flights above cities without anyone noticing).
So the objective of this post is not to make people believe mosquitos in your bedroom are NSA devices (although people are still free to think what they want without judgement), but rather it is using this fiction to build up awereness about potential dangers of leading edge technology that could be used against our privacy and freedom. Another objective is to make people think by-and-for themselves before others do it for them (and become brain-dead-near-zombies)...

Why is this ridiculous, offensive, paranoid ranting nonsense being given the light of day on this site? It's an ancient fraud, the worst sort of propaganda, couched in offensive lies and created and promoted by drooling idiots, and should be totally ignored. It's also been around for years. And it is harmful, particularly to brain-dead near-zombies, for example like the current bunch of armed idiot "militia men" running around on that scofflaw's ranch in Nevada, who actually believe they are about to be attacked by armed drones sent by Eric Holder to annihilate them. Linking to this kind of crap here, let alone quoting huge chunks of it, is totally out of line and makes this venue look like the National Enquirer at best. This site really needs some moderators who understand what they're supposed to be doing, as it's more and more circling a particularly filthy drain.
Interesting that in the UK the equivalent body to the FAA, the CAA, stipulate that their interest is safety and nothing else. So if you want to fly drones commercially you have to jump through loopholes and get permission, but it's on safety grounds and their interest/tests are all about if you can fly safely, experience etc. Seems much more sensible and rational.

Very informative post. I have known these things exist for years and I for one don't want the government snooping on me with robobugs hovering over me 24/7. I have adopted countermeasures to stay off the radar of the secret government cops. All the windows of my house are covered with aluminum foil and duct tape and when I must go out in public spaces, I always wear a ski mask to thwart the bugs facial recognition technology. Oh, i almost forgot the most important countermeasure. Under the ski mask my cranium is covered in heavy gauge aluminum foil to block the mind reading em waves. Still their tech is more powerful as the secret cops always have the regular cops hassle me. And they say I'm crazy, ha!
Saw the mosquito bot on the Elementary show, very imaginative and cute, only lacking several modifications to laws of physics to make it real.
On the show, not only was it equipped with a high resolution video feed, it kept buzzing around for hours under a glass.
And of course it injected a instantly lethal poison into the neck of an informant.
Don't get me wrong, I think tiny little flying and crawling things are going to be a significant military, CIA and NSA tool / debacle in the future, but the power problem itself is a really significant one and will not be quickly overcome.
Although I do expect novel approaches will be found, small bird sized ones can probably be produced and used relatively easily even now, especially in the perch (on a power line no less) mode shown and used for surveillance,
But I actually think our concern with privacy is way too late anyway, in the US, privacy wasn't guaranteed, only liberty and now in the name of safety and security, the media and the government is throwing away the liberty.
Oh well, it isn't the drones you need to worry about, it's the people in charge.
