DIYDrones Chat Feature Info

(We removed the Chat Feature until we can integrate it onto the site without causing Page Loading time delays and any user errors!  I'm going to work with Ning tomorrow afternoon on trying to fix the chat so that it doesn't affect any of our users.  If that doesn't work we can either wait 1-3 Months until Ning 3.0 is available to us or create an IRC)

We are trying to integrate a chat room feature without slowing down the page loading times on DIYDrones.com and we need your feedback and help.

What we need from the community:

  1. Do you like or dislike the chat feature? (Please explain why)
  2. Does it slow down your page loading times and alter your overall user experience on DIYDrones?
  3. Is this something you would like to see be perminent on DIYDrones.com?
  4. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve it?

    @Joshua

I first noticed it saturday morning USA eastern time and opened a forum post http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/how-do-i-get-rid-of-this-chat-win...

TC 111 replied, this issue continued until later in the afternoon, I checked in the evening at the chat had been stopped.

  • @tsoPANos,  If we end up having to pull the chat feature off the site thats exactly what I was thinking about doing.  Any  IRC's you recommend?

  • 1) like

    2) a bit
    3) yes

    4) why not add a Chat button next to the videos button on the top linking the users to a web based irc client connecting automatically to #ardupilot, freenode network?

Notice overall loading time in the bottom right corner.

Of course blocking ningim.com makes chat unusable.

  • @Marooned,  Did blocking Ningim.com cause any issues with the chat or site at all?

    NingIM.com
  • The chat is slowing down loading times of the website by factor 10! :(

    I use W7 with IE9.

I'm not using the chat so I choosed "disconnect".

When chat is disconnected loading times are back to normal.

I also have google chrome on my W7. The loading times in chrome seems not to be affected by the chat when it is connected.

  • Joshua, I can confirm that on my Firefox 20 chat (even when hidden) causes FF to freeze for 1..3s on *each* blogpost. I've blocked ningim.com domain with NoScript and freeze is gone.

  • @Dwgsparky,  when did you experience these issues this weekend?  Do you remember what day and around what time?  The benefit I see in the chat is that it will eliminate the small chat going on in discussion and keep the discussion all about tech and not off topic things.

@Doug,  Do you experience the slow down if you disconnect from the chat?

    Hi Joshua

I had many problems over the weekend with the chat system slowing down the main page and the tool bar following the touch mouse on an Iphone. very disturbing but I know you rectified that issue. Thank you.

I think that chat is OK for specific purposes, (tech support, chase an order etc anything that is 1 to 1 ) but no value in this community. we have experts all over the world in different time zones and schedules and we have people looking for information, help and advice. the chat system will fragmentise the good work done by many people,

When I want answers to a problem I will look to the forum because that is the best place to find ALL the experts and get the BIG picture, not just the well meaning local expert online at the time I am looking. he might know less than me!.

The other issue is the Biggy. when my UAV or APM suddenly finds a new challenge for me to solve I want to search and read other peoples posts to find out what I did or what I missed. I cant do that on chat..

Sorry but for me its a BIG NO, I see NO benefits to the community.

  • It slows down my pages significantly but then I am using an old D610 with XP Home SP3.
