DJI Inspire 1 Catches Fire On Passanger Plane

From an account on Twitter we found a post about a fire on a plane because of a drone! Wait, what? So it appears a DJI Inspire 1 caught fire in the overhead compartment, we do not know the cause of the fire but looks like a moderate one. Glad it happened on the ground and not the air! The attendants quickly put out the fire and removed the craft and its owner!

  • I heard that the Inspire was left turned on. A good reason not to leave the battery in the Inspire while traveling.

  • Guess we won't be taking our lipos on planes anymore after this as if they didnt give us a hard enough time trying to get a drone on a plane
  • Yeah, this was pretty inevitable.  Amazing that the first time it happened was with an Inspire or other system with a highly-engineered battery and charging system.  I figured it would be some fragile high-C battery with nothing more than shrink-wrap.

I see a booming local battery rental business about to start.

  • My concern is that we are going to have more difficulties to find batteries when we live far from manufacturers (that we are having now) because of neglected guys :(

  • Yeah, but hopefully some company will finally offer a safe battery for drones...

  • Sadly very true

  • My guess is this is going to have repercussions way beyond DJI.

I wonder if the owner had discharged the batteries to the storage level or had charged them full up before the trip?
