3D Robotics Inc., one of the better-funded, high-profile drone startups, is laying off an undisclosed number of its staff in a restructuring aimed at moving more quickly into the commercial market, due to heavy competition in the consumer drone market.

  • Don't know if you remember when they hired a high profile from Dji to take care of the sales and marketing of 3DR two years ago. It's probably very a very conspirationnist idea :) but I wonder if it was a good idea.

  • I would like to know what is actually happening with Jordi.  I've not seen him engaging with the Ardupilot developer group at all.  Chris comments that he is pursuing something "well-aligned".  I'm very curious to know what that is.  It doesn't appear to have any connection to Ardupilot.

  • I wonder what else happened 'quietly'?

  • can the Pixhawk 2 now make it to the store?

  • Yes, that one happened quietly - Jordi leaving.

Not sure 3DR will be able to do this transition with surplus consumer Solo stock. So hope there is something new in the works.

  • I don't recall seeing any mention of Jordi leaving the company. Last thing I read was Mexican President gives Jordi Munoz top young entrepreneur award

  • 1: Revitalize DIYDrones and 3DR into a more personable presence
2: Introduce a crowd funding platform
3: Market community designed products based on a set of standards and take reasonable flexible commissions
    4: Win

    yes no? lol

I feel sad for Chris and Jordi who got trap in the classical growth dream, ironically getting killed by the investors expecting unrealistic fast returns, pushing the founders to evolve to areas they were uncomfortable with and ultimately bringing their baby, 3DR, to the ground. My advice to Chris, leave this sinking ship to return to what you did best: DIY community builder, relaunch a new startup and this time do not let your company be destroyed by greedy investors.
