Ducted Fan Quadcopter

Testing ducted fan quad, flies great.  My intention was to build a tricopter but just had to see how a quad would fly with 90mm EDF's.  Also tested as a "V-Tail" in the quad configeration, it flies with a 15 degree rear facing angle and is more sensitive to inputs.

  • Hi. How did you get pusher prop for ducted fan?

I also interested in ducted fan quad, however, I have no idea for reverse-pitch ducted fan.

    Give me a comment!

  • Hi, nice setup.

Would it be possible to port multiwii soft to apm? I really would like to test it but cant afford to by new hw.

  • Yes, same fan, they used to be under $49.00.  Everything except the motor is also available for under $18.00 before shipping and Custome fees.  That's why it is my first choice, I can really "hack" away at the housing and afford to experiment with it.  Sorry about the dirty word "afford".

  • Yow, that is a tragic way to mount it.

Is it this fan you're using?

  • The frame is from Multiwiicopter, the Stealth

Motor/esc's are the 90mm 5 bladed units from Hobbyking

ESC's are Turingy Plush 60 amp from Hobbyking

Flight controller is the Quadrino from Flyingeinstein using Multiiwii 2.0 and Arduino 1 (I have invested a lot in the APM1 and APM2, finally gave up) sorry guys.

3692414113?profile=originalThe fan required a lot of modifications, I am going to re-do them with a saddle attached to the outside.  Right now I use the Multiwiicopter Scarab motor mounts on 12 x 10mm CF arms.  This is a very strong setup but must take away from performance.

It flies pretty good with a 4S - 2650ma battery and gets about 3 minutes.  It really haules on a 6S and gets 5 minutes with a 2700ma and I have been flying it very hard.  I am sure it will get longer flying time with better motors and move to an external mount.

It is not too noisy until I apply some heavy throttle.

I believe there is a future with a shrouded fan, ducted fans are designed to work best at extreemly high RPM, I run well below half of what it is designed for.

  • Very cool!  Which battery do you use and how much flight time do you get on a full charge?

  • Wow, that's impressive!  Can you share your recipe?  Which fan units, motors, ESC, and flight controller?  Is that APM?

It didn't even sound bad! It actually sounded even better than a quad, to me at least.
