Eurgle/Turnigy/FlySky 9x Upgrades

There is plenty of info on modding the 9x Radio to make it better, I dont intend to tell people how to do it, only how easy it is to make the changes and show some photo's of the things i have added/changed.

The kick stand is great when at home programming or playing on the sim, saves the cables getting bent etc. It clamps onto the handle on the back, and doesnt get in the way at all (even when removing the screws to get inside)

3689459747?profile=originalThe next picture was the first mod I made, the 6 Position switch. Not really needed and I wish I hadn't done it now, I would use the 3 pos switch and the 2 pos switch mix thing thats descibed very well in the forums. Having said that, it is an easy mod and works well, I cheated a bit and used 5x 1K resistors and just use a curve to get the right points in MP

3689459788?profile=originalWith the original RX I had a few problems, very intermittant, and only when banking left... spot the tiny ball of solder that shorts 2 pins on the IC in the RX module, it actually rolls back and forward under there. It very briefly connects channel 3 and 4 which I think must screw up the APM and cause a sudden crash! Removing the ball fixed the problem

So the FrSKY DJT combo was ordered along with the FrSKYLite thingy bob for RS232 voltage level shifting. I added the FrSKYLite inside the TX module and used 2 spare pins in the rear connector so there is no extra hloes needed in the case. also used the 5V and ground pins from the outside connector. There is also a 4K7 resistor on one line (under the heat shrink) I dont know what its for but it was in a circuit diagram I followed.

  • @Chris Huitema

That looks fantastic, what firmware is that you have flashed?

  • I did a few mods to my new 9x last week and thought it would be a great idea to gather all available mods in wiki, categorized and well described. Any thoughts about it? (my 9x now - "white" backlight, flashed with Er9x)

  • Woo good work ! I don't think it is possible to do all this work with the 9x ! I will certainly do the same on mine now :)

  • The standard battery pack is a waste of time and i would bin it straight away. there are drop in batteries available that do the job nicely and are rechargeable, all you need to do is change the plug.

Inside the main unit there are a few changes required, the hardest one is removing 2 tiny resistors and connecting 2 lines to different pins on the microprocessor, the pins are super tiny and very fragile, but once its done its done. Adding the Smartie Parts board is easy, and even though I have the V1 board in the transmitter which has an incorrectly connected pad, its still an easy mod (just remove one pogo stick and add a wire connected to a resistor). This board is also where the MISO/MOSI lines from the FrSKY connect to. Easy!

Getting the signal is fairly straight forward, just cut a couple of traces on the back board (that ground the unused pins, there are traces on both sides incase you are doing the same) and we are in business.

The Smartie Parts board comes with a really cool blue backlight that makes reading the display really crisp and clear. And as the instuctions remind you, change the stupid + and - buttons around while your slipping it behind the display. Splash screens make this the best thing on the market, check out my super cool Octaquad splash!

The best bit of all this is the massive upgrade in the software, thanks to Thus and Erazz. The feature list is huge and as I just found out allows 16 channels to be transmitted! just plug another TX module into the trainer port.  Also there is a way to program the remote on the computer and set curves, mixers etc and even simulate the outputs on the screen. Once your happy then flash it to the remote.
