It's interesting that although some competitors tried very ambitious neural-network learning approaches to the contest, the winner just tuned the stock code with some better PID values.
The consensus from everyone is that the Pi Zero just doesn't have enough horsepower for proper AI. The organizers are considering switching to Raspberry Pi 3 for the next season, which I heartily endorse.
