Pleased to announce today that my new App FIND MY DRONE is now available in the App Store. FIND MY DRONE is a FREE App that connects your iPhone to your personal UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) using the popular MAVLink protocol.

Watch this space, FIND MY DRONE will soon be followed by MAVPilot, a ground control station for your pocket.

if you look here it explains how to connect it up http://www.communistech.com/blog/support/ feel free to contact me for further help

  • So the signal is sent out via telemetry & the Iphone reads this? I am also confused on this. I do like the idea of a iphone flight controller though, lol.

  • Love your work and progress Bill. I've been waiting a long time for someone to write an iPhone app to interface with the APM...
I realize it is outside the purpose of this app, but would you ever consider adding the function for the flying drone to 'follow me' using the phones GPS coordinates ?
  • Excellent work.   Finally a use for my obsolete IPhone  (thanks to Android)

Ah ok I got it: the wifly+3DR module are in the ground side and not on the drone! So indeed the APP is then only useful when not using a GCS.
I initially thought the wifly was on the drone in between APM and the 3DR module to serve as a beacon for the IPhone APP...I looked for a too complicated thing
Thx for bearing my slow understanding.

    Thanks for all the comments.

@Hugues: The link is iPhone using WiFi to the RN-XV WiFi module (it's a tiny WiFi Router) which resends the data over the 3DR Ground Radio to the 3DR Air Radio.

@Dwgsparky: It currently does not have a feature to listen in on the MAVLink message between another GCS like Mission Planner. The idea is that if you are not using a GCS you could use this instead, but still be sure you can find your drone. (bit see comment to @all below)

@Sebastian: I haven't spoken with the Fighting Walrus Team yet, but there is no technical reason I cannot support it in the App. I do have a Bluetooth Low Energy solution in the works that allows a simpler connection from the iOS device to the 3DR Radio.

@all: This is a standalone app, but the functionality will be integrated into the MAVPilot GCS, a ground control station for you pocket. Is this scenario there will be no need for a laptop in the field. Please register an interest if you would like to be part of the Alpha/Beta test of the product using the link found on this page here

Like many I am also struggling with the communication path for this to work.

I understand the APM - 3dr in the UAV but I have a ground station (with the other 3dr ) that I use every flight. Does the APP simply listen in on this GCS -APM conversation and pick out the GPS locations? I thought that the 3DRs are paired up with a code and that they only work as a point to point system, ie no extra receiver. Still baffled. !!

  • Hugues: APM with 3DRadio -> 3DRadio on the ground which is connected to wifi -> phone

Bill: will the Fighting Walrus Radio be supported? http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fighting-walrus-radio

    Bill,

I may be very dumb but i do not get the concept :

-the idea is to find your drone when lost, thus by definition when it flew faraway from the pilot and fell somewhere in the field. This means that the drone is then WAY OUT of reach of wifi range.

-So I do not get the wifi-telemetry radio bridge thing ? can you draw a full scheme for me from APM telemetry port to the Iphone ? I just don't get it.

thx and sorry for a dummy question
