Flying Fox autopilot

I've been working on an open source autopilot for a while now. It's not finished yet but it's getting close. The board is quite small - about the size of an ESC - and weighs 10g.

Features:* Plugs directly into any R/C receiver - up to nine control channels.* Can control up to ten servos.* Combined GPS/IR leveler board makes installation easy.* Barometric altimeter.* microSD card for flight plans and data storage.* Fully open source software. You can improve it or change it however you like.* Easily reprogrammed via USB with no need for a special programmer.* Powerful on-board flight scripting language.* Optional radio link to the ground.* Optional 9-axis IMU.* Many expansion options including I2C, SPI, etc.* Powerful ARM7 processorBy the way this is an open source project - not a commercial project - so please don't ask me for release dates or free samples! The autopilot software is at:http://code.google.com/p/flyingfox/My original (kinda old) build thread is at:http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734791

  • Ohnoes you are moving out of Australia! :(
Hope you find success wherever you end up all the same. :)
The commercialization sounds pretty reasonable, as the older boards are made available I am sure the community will contribute features that will probably assist the commercial versions.
  • @Joseph: It's not quite working yet - and I'm moving country to work on autopilots commercially so I probably won't have a chance to work on it for a few weeks.

@Noth666: My general plan is to release the hardware myself. I'll make previous-generation hardware designs available as open source while I sell the latest generation myself. This allows me to make a little money to cover the (substantial) development costs.
  • @joseph: I plan to make the hardware available for purchase if Zik does not object, since it is based on his design. I have the gear etc to make these quite easily (I have a small company set up on purpose to be able to).
  • BTW Zik,
Have you had a chance to verify the 1.0 board as working correctly?
  • Indeed UAV Playground looks quite pretty hehe.
@Noth666 Sounds like a great idea, if anyone can get some of these assembled I am interested in buying one. ^.^.
  • Wowza awesome stuff, I think I'll have to make a mod of this to use some slightly different sensors and see if I can get it working properly - I've been waiting for something exactly like this for some time.
But I think for the IMU IDG-500+ISZ-500+mma7361, and then airspeed and altitude from 2xSCP1000 would be the bomb. Working on a mod of it already, PCB layout still in progress.
  • Thanks jaron, UAV Playground looks great by the way!
  • Zik, your project is interesting. Please let me know if you need some information about the UAV Playground or if you need a specific extension/interface.

Oh interfacing with UAV playground, that would be cool, I think a few of us are playing with that already.
  • Currently I'm not using any ground station software (still working on it) but I'm planning to give "UAV Playground" a try.
