Flying with a drone through a metro tunnel

Drone makes unique underground footage in Amsterdam

For the first time a drone has flown through (part of) the 9.7 km long Noord/Zuidlijn, a new underground North/South metro line that is now under construction in Amsterdam. The drone, fitted with an HD-camera, flies from the north of Amsterdam under the river IJ, the Central Station and the historic centre of Amsterdam.

Pilot on a bicycle
In the footage you can see how far this kind of camera has evolved. The pilot, on a bicycle, navigated the drone and on another bike did the filming, while someone else did the pedaling. The drone was filmed by a cameraman on another bicycle with a DSLR camera stabilized with a Sky Glide. Together this created unique footage lasting almost 3 minutes.

  • but you can do the same thing with the camera gimbal on your bike ;)

  • The simplest hand/car/bicycle mounted gimbal would have been much better.

The only part that makes sense is the beginning, entering the tunnel, poorly filmed and edited.

  • Haha. That would have been awesome. And we even have 2 action cams (GoPro 3 and a Sony HDR-AS15). We didn't think it would be that interesting.

Result of the Sony on a little train during tunnel boring machine process:

  • Cool video, a very interesting perspective.

I'd like to have seen the following crew, especially in the narrow bore it must have been interesting to keep it sorted.

You needed one more bicycle in back filming the whole thing in front with a helmet mounted GoPro.

    Best Regards,

    Gary

  • Yes, it would have been easier, with the exception of the start. A part of it has been done in such a way (where you can see the drone itself). However, we got these images basically for free (we made our building pit available and made our own edit) because Thales was making a corporate movie for their new dutch HQ where a drone played an important role: http://studiomad.nl/portfolio/thales-promofilm/

Because a drone is still something new for many people, we could use it the spread the word. Online, but also for the traditional media. About 2 million Dutch viewers saw it primetime on the Dutch national television.

Wouldn't have been simpler to just walk with a handheld gimbal??
