So I was reading the article on the MIT guys using the kinect to map out a physical space and what struck me was not the amazing mapping technology, but their really great guard they've got on their quad props.
It looks like the straight edges are CF Rods... does anybody know about the light-colored round pieces that connect under the motor? Any ideas on the best material/process to make some that are reasonably strong?

Those blade guards are actually manufactured and sold by ascending technologies.
The black pieces are carbon fiber rods, and the tan is fiberglass (3 peices glued together). The bottom and top part are machined out of a thicker materical to form the shape, and the middle (wide) piece is flexed and glued into place.
Our previous (self made) blade guards (which you can see in our older video) were machined out of polycarbonate. The new fiberglass ones are stiffer/better, and obviously provide much better coverage

I am very interested in finding a good solution for this, too. The STARMAC guys are also using these kinds of guards and I think they frequent diydrones, so maybe they will tell us how they get these.
