UK tech magazine reports that Google have bought a quad....

Hype from a manufacturer or are they playing UAS??
German article here

Fortune just reported it as well, we live in interesting times, maybe Google has enough clout to get the FAA to look at UAS use in the USA.

  • Well, you could always build your own brushless. (http://www.gobrushless.com/) I tried that with their stuff once, a small one takes patience to do but it runs, that is , until you find out you didn't use enough glue and can start over again.

I imagine a bigger motor is easier to build though, since you can use looser tolerances.
  • @Fab and Jawahar - The MD4-1000 is not mine, rather I'm a member of a team that will be taking it and a couple of smaller quads to Antarctica to photograph penguin rookeries.

@Jawahar - Yes, these motors are lower KV than the 2s and 3s motors we use on our smaller machines, because they are driven by 6s (18 AH!) battery packs. I'm afraid you won't find them at HobbyKing. The MD4-1000 specs can be found here: http://www.microdrones.com/en_md4-1000_tech_data.php

One impressive spec that isn't listed there is the prop size - 700mm!

I noticed trees all over the place when Chris did his flight there in 07, I propose selling some of them there search trees. That must be how it works all the branches of information.

  • Was digging through their trash & noticed someone at Google bought a hamburger. Will sell the wrappers for $5 million.

Well its done Microdrone a world of good for their products!! Fair play to them but lets hope Google does not mind the privacy inferences and slight bad press its generating.

Those in the know say it ain't true:

"PR:"Google is not testing or using this technology. This was a purchase by a Google executive with an interest in robotics for personal use"" (from Jeff Jarvis)
  • @Don bigger motors have lower kv rating right ? does hobbyking sell them? your quad looks awesome ! specs ? :)

I saw one flying at Waddington, not the machine for a windy day
  • Thanks Don, I like your setup. So the quad comes with kids :) It would be cool to see the larger one drop the smaller one from a height and then to see them both return by themselves.
