H-Cell 2.0 Hydrogyn fuel cell hybrid power-train for RC models

This might interest some of you.

A hydrogen fuel cell hybrid power-train for 1/10 scale model hobby RC. The H-Cell 2.0 can be connected to almost any RC platform and will provide continuous power to recharge the on-board batteries. Using this hybrid system it is possible to increase the run time of RC vehicles by more than four times!

When the solar panel option is included the HydroFILL and H-Cell 2.0 become a 100% renewable energy system. The solar panel also has the added benefit of making the HydroFILL mobile and HydroSTIKs can be refilled anywhere the sun shines!

  • The problem for both the electric engine and hydrogen fuel cell is the same.

    Energy storage.

I'm the first to say electric motor out perform internal combustion engines like you wouldn't believe but the batteries needed to make them work don't have the energy density of a liquid gas (this is changing BTW like the lithium capacitor but its still a few years off). It’s the same problem fuel cells have, the hydrogen gas tanks takes up more space and weight then an equal amount of liquid fuel would and there is no real fix for it on the horizon. This is on top of the expense and rarity of what’s needed to make a fuel cell work make them a really inefficient.

now if you replace the fuel cell (making electrical power for the electric motors) with a small gas engine powering a generator ( making the same levels of power as the fuel cell) you'll get more efficiency. In this set up the internal combustion engine can be very small and run at a constant speed with a constant load were they're most efficient.

so sure the fuel cell one the tiger was more efficient then the internal combustion engine it replaced, but when they say that they're talking about the engine to drive the plane. That engine is was at least 3 to 5 horse power strong and quite heavy but you can make the same amount of electrical power the fuel cell put out with a far smaller gas powered engine then that.

When you compare difference between a fuel cell and a internal combustion engine doing the same job (making electrical energy to power an electeric motor) the gas powered engine wins.

tho I totally agree that fuels cells are good because then will drive invention with is always good in my views.
  • Ion Tiger is great, but its weight is far above any amateur application of the technology. I suspect that will always be the case given weight regulations. Also, does it say how much that 550watts cost to research, build and maintain? Way out of my budget.
  • lol elec vs gas, hybrid always wins http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/04/behold-americas/
  • I don’t think his argument was saying it was not efficient. I could be wrong but he may have a point. Given the amount of energy spent to make all the various parts and as said the rare materials that are mined, it very well could be more expensive to produce.
I would bet it will pay for itself rather quickly. I would like to test this in the real world.
  • "The 550-Watt (0.75 horsepower) fuel cell onboard the Ion Tiger has about 4 times the efficiency of a comparable internal combustion engine and the system provides 7 times the energy in the equivalent weight of batteries."
  • I really don't care about green tech(I'm not against it), but I'm more interested in technology which will add to longer flight times and endurance and efficiency.

I'm not sure that i agree with you that this tech causes more problems than it solves, and I'm also not sure i agree with the following statement:

"they still will never reach the efficiency of a gas engine"

They said the same thing about electric engines, but recently I've seen a lot of buddies switch to electric because it is outperforming gas and less messy(and still getting even more efficient every year).

This fuel cell is not a solution to all of our problems, but it is definitely a step in the right direction and hopefully will spawn more research and competition.
  • There have been UAVs (rc planes) made with PEMFC's (this kind of fuel cell). Check out Ion Tiger: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/10/091013123350.htm
Just goes to show what kind of flight time you can get out of a Fuel Cell, a Hydrogen Tank, and a well-designed plane.
(try getting a 23 hour flight in that plane on gas)
  • okay now understand this is coming from someone who loves the green movement and green tech....

    hydrogen fuel cells are trash.

they will never be as good or even as Environmentaly friendly as simple gas engine running on simple bio fuels. these things are made out of rare metals that the mines of causes more problems for the world then it solves. even if they do fine away o use commen metals they still will never reach the efficiency of a gas engine.

they push fuel cells because they'll make more money then all of the other green tech out there.
  • This page provides some flight videos using the fuel cell. Looks promising although pricy(but not as pricy as i thought)
  • And a PPT presentation: http://www.hes.sg/files/AeropakProductPresentation.pps
