Says that roadside cleaning workers found a abandoned hexa-copter near a penitentiary (in Presidente Venceslau, São Paulo state, Brazil), loaded with 3 cell phones with chargers and 3 saw blades (amateurs!). Probably was an attempt to deliver the cell phones to inmates (cell phones are very forbidden in Brazilian penitentiaries). Previous attempts involved pigeons with small backpacks, bows, arrows, and more.
No good news. I can already hear our precious politicians discoursing against hexacopters (and pigeons, and bows, and arrows,...).

might have been a night flight and they lost orientation
Like a year or two ago I was wondering how many drones are flying across Mexico/US border with different cargo... Practically invisible by radars, fully automatic with GPS onboard. Perfect carriers without a trace who started it. I guess the "right guys" needs a system to track them down.
Also probably they fled the scene to not be arrested.
Its happened in the UK and the US already with standard RC heli's they are crashed into yards whatever is quickly taken and then the guards get the wreck. Hands up all those that now understand why regulations for UA flight are high on the agenda.
probably a dead battery, they could have picked a base too far away or the day was too windy, or they were surprised, ditched and fled. many possible scenarios.

I'll bet they just couldn't find it. No Return-to-launch functionality when they got into trouble perhaps.
It begs the question, was this the first attempt? Were they successful in previous attempts? I guess only the criminals know.
Wow that's got to be several hundred dollars worth of UAV equipment. Why would someone throw that much money at something then just leave it at the side of the road...
Jason, I bet the attempt would not have failed it they were using APM. ;-)

I saw something just the other day with somebody trying to fly a small helicopter into a jail in the UK... And so it begins.
When it's criminal to own an Arducopter, only criminals will have Arducopters! ;)
