Adafruit has just posted a great tutorial on adding prop guards and cool LEDs to IRIS:
UFO Drones
This summer light up the night sky and fly safe with your drone. In this project, we'll show you how you can upgrade the IRIS quad copper with LED NeoPixel rings and 3d printed prop guards. These parts provide extra protection to your propellers and are extremely light weight.

Those rings are nice... very easy to use. Got a couple of the 16's sitting on my desk now!
Somebody did it for DJI naza and it looks super awesome
Now, trinket doesn't have serial port so it may be tricky to listen for mavenlink, but arduino pro mini have serial, works on 5v so it can be powered from bec directly. And jD-IOBoard can definitely do the trick.
this may help :) needs at least a 328 processor https://github.com/jdrones/jD-IOBoard.git hacking at this myself to do same for preggo IRIS(which is covered in various spots with a 155/1m NeoPixel strip split into 9 circuits

ps MUST have neopixel rings!!
I have implemented this NeoPixel sketch at my 60 LED ring.

Now we only need mavlink integration to change color pattern based on flight mode.
That's pretty neat!
There's this kid in the Philippines that drew and printed out his own prop guards for his quad...certainly not as fancy as Adafruit's LED Prop Guards but it's still really awesome: http://www.instructables.com/id/Quadcopter-HACK-Universal-Prop-guar...
