Latest improvements to the Mission Planner

3689539931?profile=originalJust a quick post to highlight Michael Oborne's great work evolving the Mission Planner, which seems to get better with every day! Above you can see the new frame selection screen, which gives a sense of the dizzying variety of configurations that APM:Copter supports.

There's a new desktop icon, too

If you hit CTRL-W, you can see an alpha preview of what will be the new Setup Wizard:

And if you're feeling really brave, play around the with the alpha Swarming interface (CTRL-F). We'll be posting a tutorial on multi-UAV swarming in a few weeks, so I recommend you wait for that before trying it. But it's just a glimpse of how powerful the Mission Planner is. Bravo Michael!

  • What I cannot figure out now is how you can upload new firmware. The firmware list under initial setup is gone. frustrating when I have looked under all the other tabs.

  • It's possible to use an own Geotiff map instead  of Google maps? Perhaps is usefull for monitoring presicion agriculture

I'm starting to implement multi-drone support on Droidplanner. On that video I'm running two instances of the SILT simulator (one on each side screen), and view both planes on Droidplanner (center screen). Here is alink to a discussion.

  • Absolutely awesome!!

@Arthur: nice video, some comments or text on whats going on would be great tough!

Indeed, motors position for H and X are the same. But H frame is more flexible when yaw. For that reason, when you select H, the rotation of all motors is on opposite direction as from X. It was a post with nice explanation on this.

Me I am using H frame, but still with X frame type and still fly OK. But I will try the H  frame type and see the difference. This should be visible if H frame is really easy to twist. The H frame type "helps" the yaw movement.

Joe, as Gary notes, there are probably on the order of 500 wiki pages across all the APM projects and the Mission Planner changes about once a week, so as you can see, the math of updating every page with every MP release is unrealistic. But we do have a team working hard on updating pages for major changes. Like everything else here, from the MP to the code itself, it's a volunteer effort, so we'd love to have your help.

  • Its just orientation for people that do not know which category to put their multirotor.

  • What does selecting the new "H Frame" option provide users that the older "X Frame" doesn't?

  • WTF? Whenever a firmware-capable chip is updated, there's ALWAYS a chance of frying it. That's one of the first things they teach at computer school... Please don't dismiss it as user error. Read this post if you disbelieve: http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/1-2-52-update-unresponsive-drone?...

But the documentation has been frustratingly spotty to say the least. As this is an Open-Source project, amalgamating the wiki pages is like herding cats. Software development is very much like playing whack-a-mole on a roller coaster during a hurricane.
  • Flashing the firmware with a version already installed simply installs that firmware again. Has no other effect.

If you fried your APM then it was something else that caused it.

I was just looking at APM 1.2.66 and I could not find the Firmware upgrade button

It, turns out it does not exit once you are connected.

Not connected, clicking  on INITAIL SETUP lists - Install Firmware - 3DRadio - Antenna Tracker

Connected, clicking  on INITAIL SETUP lists - >> Mandatory Hardware - Frame Type - Compass -Accel Calibration - Radio Calibratio >> Optional Hardware

IMHO the rash of daily "improvements" to Mission Planner has simply gotten out of hand, the line has been crossed into the ridiculous.
