About Me:

I'm a disabled shut-in who enjoys video games and deep thinking. Flying robots will shape the future of the species and I hope to have something to do with that.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I barely comprehend the difference between PPM and PWM. I have been "into" drones since January 2013, so I'm very much a neophyte. I avoid high-brow verbiage on the subject because, as in any industry, loudmouthed noobs tend to be ostracized. This is a good thing, so if I ever need a time out, no offense will be taken. I have particular interests in SAR Activities, Precision Agriculture, Xtreme Data Gathering, and Asteroid Mining.

Dave Kellum replied to Raph's discussion new style 3DR 850kv motors?
"I have a Quad C with the old style motors, one of which died.
I bought a new motor, and when I started attaching it to the body, I noticed it was sitting about 1/8" lower than the other three, which would definitely screw up my flight dynamics. I…"

"I was just about to post a topic on the forums asking about APM for dodecacopters, but it seems our intrepid community is already on the case. I'll just wait..."

Dave Kellum commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Latest improvements to the Mission Planner
"WTF? Whenever a firmware-capable chip is updated, there's ALWAYS a chance of frying it. That's one of the first things they teach at computer school... Please don't dismiss it as user error. Read this post if you disbelieve:…"

Dave Kellum commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Latest improvements to the Mission Planner
"Flashing the firmware with a version already installed is what fried my APM. There should be something in the software to prevent this. I'd QA that, but having a shoebox of APMs would be a prerequisite."

Dave Kellum replied to Dave Kellum's discussion Is my APM 2.5 bricked?
"UPDATE:
My APM was in fact bricked. It doesn't even communicate with JTAG. No matter, I'll just get an APM 2.6 and never ever EVAR flash the firmware unless I need to, i.e. for an update. 3DR could as well include a warning about that, but they…"

Dave Kellum commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Engineers create "disposable UAVs" inspired by paper planes
"The whole idea of 'disposable' anything reeks of negligence. Samara is a neat design, but deploying them means littering on an enormous scale- these aren't exactly biodegradable, and critters will unknowingly ingest them for sure. "

Dave Kellum commented on Scott Berfield's blog post Rotorwing using Magnus Effect
"The Flettner airplane never flew because it looked to be as heavy as the Eiffel Tower and as aerodynamic. The guy in the YouTube seems to have shed the extra tons of Flettner's design."

Dave Kellum replied to Gary McCray's discussion Vibration Isolation and Dampening of APM / PX4 for version 2.9
""Our current "solutions" are actually designed
for much larger masses and are not nearly as
effective for the light mass of our flight
control board as they ought to be."

What if the APM were heavier? What if the case were made of lead? Wouldn't it…"

Dave Kellum replied to Dave Kellum's discussion Is my APM 2.5 bricked?
"So, I was unplugging/plugging my APM peripherals in various combinations when THIS happened. Aren't these things supposed to be crimped onto the board?

They came right off with the same pressure I always use (which is very little). Too much…"

Dave Kellum posted a discussion
Whenever I initially use the latest version of Mission Planner, I reflexively "upgrade" the APM 2.5 firmware. It's an instinct I've developed after working with computers for 30+ years to make sure everything is concurrent, and I've done this for…

I Launched MP 1.2.51 and it mentioned there was a new version available, which I upgraded to in the app. I connected to my APM 2.5 via USB and updated the firmware as per usual when a new build of the MP has dropped. When I power cycled everything,…
