Lesson of GPS : epic fail no. 3

Some lessons are priceless...

Never trust GPS in forested area surrounded by colossal mountains of the West Coast.
Pre-crash:
Before putting video goggles, I always do a short flight, testing behaviour of the aircraft. Then I switch to "loiter", put goggles on and get comfortable.
This time I put the quad in loiter, put the goggles on (takes 5 seconds), and then watch the video feed showing the quad is drifting sideways.
Too late.

  • Very lucky!

Except now we're on 2.6 combo GPS & compass, it's becoming increasingly difficult to "not trust" the GPS unit.

As I discovered recently - my 2.6 GPS/compass rotated 50' round on it's post midflight due to vibration, and I had a barely controllable, toilet-bowl-tastic craft.

  • <sarcasm> That's an excellent gopro! Must be from a bad batch!  </sarcasm>

  • you really got lucky with the eletronics. but let me replace your statement: "Never trust GPS." that's it. it can also fail in good enviorment, and you must be able to fly it manually at anytime. i always fly planned missions, 100m agl, distant from cities and always with good weather, and some times the gps glitches mid-flight, assuming it's totally in a wrong position or even loosing all satelites, and it's 3dlock. it's not common, and usually the gps fixes itself in a few seconds, but it's good to always have a backup plan.

  • I'm impressed that it all lived after that dip in the water!

  • At least the copter is cleaned by the water! You were lucky that the switching regulators didn't stall and put through the lipovoltage to the electronics...

Keep rolling! And thanks for sharing!
