You may have noticed some slight design changes here over the past day, which are simply me band-aiding a situation where the external site that hosted some of our design files shut down, leaving a bunch of broken images and mangled CSS here. For now I've reverted to some native Ning design features and brought back an old header (above), but this strikes me as a good time to start the process of a proper redesign.
In Spring, Ning (which we're hosted on) will roll out a bunch of new design and functionality features, which should improve things here considerably. It still won't perfect, especially for very long comment threads, so we're going to launch some new forums for product/software discussion/support on the new manual/wiki site that we'll be previewing in a few weeks. These new forums will be based on a very good WordPress forum plug-in, so they should be a big step up from what we've currently got. And by pushing product/technical support to a separate site, DIY Drones can focus more on its original function on news and discussion about civilian UAVs and technology in general.
In the meantime, it's time to update our header. So I'd like to launch a competition for the best design. The winner will get an APM 2.5+.
Guidelines:
- Create a rectangular graphic (width 955 1,000 pixels, height anything from 100 to 200 pixels) that will replace the above.
- The name should stay the same ("DIY Drones") but the tagline should change to "Amateur UAVs, Contests, Products and More" Revision: I've had advice to lead with "community", so let's try this: "The Leading Community for Amateur and Civilian UAVs" Another revision! After yet more advice, let's go with "The leading community for personal UAVs". You can use any style you think looks best (caps or lowercase).
- There should be some image of a UAV. Ideally, it should look cool and "drone-like" but not look military or threatening. Fixed wing or multicopter, it's up to you.
- Post your submissions in the comments below
- The competition will run one month, until March 23rd
Last time we did this, back in 2010, we got some great submissions. I'm looking forward to seeing what the design talent in this community can come up with this time!

The contest is a win/win actually. The professional designers have an opportunity to give back to the community which loves them, & the principles don't waste their dilution on expensive branding (which is a tad more than $100/hour). Please do carry on. My apologies for clogging up the pipe.

@DRThanks for looking after me. I figured as much when I got the ominous "we don't like your kind snooping around our business, get out" *spits tobaca on the dirt* message from agent Smith. As much as I'd like to comply to such sentiments, he couldn't provide me a specific basis, so I don't know which behavior to modify. It was more of a pure & honest hate from the gut sorta thing which is why I "liked" him before un-friending him. An honest gesture, but not one that helps me to figure out how to speak better roman in this citidel. Nor can I think of any reason why being banned would be something to avoid. Cron recursively grabs my prior art without regard to obscenity & the pet hydra loves fresh meat, especially it's own. What am I missing here? This is the interwebs, not Topeka.
Certainly I don't consider my posts rants. The thread relevance is because this is the thread where someone was being shut up for no obvious reason then for the fun it--an offense I am responding to for the love & preservation of open tech forums, not an offense I am originating. What's the rants & raves forum? Is that something like the little free speech pen the NYPD put the critics in so they can be more easily tased?
The guy who architected the chinese internet sometimes accepts responsibility, sometimes doesn't, but I've not seen him do so to the forum at large. E.g. it was likely him who deleted the post which profiled those committing code to the project. But it's hard to know what's going on in a forum where those controlling it are afraid of taking real criticism.
I've learned more about this site from guys like you than all the rest combined. I wouldn't take it personally bro. Some people only learn through pain. Those who ignore intelligent commentary will git forked in the end.

here are a couple of designs I came up with. I didn't have a good pic from the drone ... so if you decide to go for that design it would be nice to get a better image to make it even better - and of course I hope the original designer is ok with what I did ;-)

I'm following this thread as I'm interested in the logo. I'm not however interested in readings offensive discussion about moderation. Some of you says how bad it is not to follow some rules and at the same time you breaking others.
