You may have noticed some slight design changes here over the past day, which are simply me band-aiding a situation where the external site that hosted some of our design files shut down, leaving a bunch of broken images and mangled CSS here. For now I've reverted to some native Ning design features and brought back an old header (above), but this strikes me as a good time to start the process of a proper redesign.
In Spring, Ning (which we're hosted on) will roll out a bunch of new design and functionality features, which should improve things here considerably. It still won't perfect, especially for very long comment threads, so we're going to launch some new forums for product/software discussion/support on the new manual/wiki site that we'll be previewing in a few weeks. These new forums will be based on a very good WordPress forum plug-in, so they should be a big step up from what we've currently got. And by pushing product/technical support to a separate site, DIY Drones can focus more on its original function on news and discussion about civilian UAVs and technology in general.
In the meantime, it's time to update our header. So I'd like to launch a competition for the best design. The winner will get an APM 2.5+.
Guidelines:
- Create a rectangular graphic (width 955 1,000 pixels, height anything from 100 to 200 pixels) that will replace the above.
- The name should stay the same ("DIY Drones") but the tagline should change to "Amateur UAVs, Contests, Products and More" Revision: I've had advice to lead with "community", so let's try this: "The Leading Community for Amateur and Civilian UAVs" Another revision! After yet more advice, let's go with "The leading community for personal UAVs". You can use any style you think looks best (caps or lowercase).
- There should be some image of a UAV. Ideally, it should look cool and "drone-like" but not look military or threatening. Fixed wing or multicopter, it's up to you.
- Post your submissions in the comments below
- The competition will run one month, until March 23rd
Last time we did this, back in 2010, we got some great submissions. I'm looking forward to seeing what the design talent in this community can come up with this time!

>Now... can someone post some new logo pictures already!
Wow, great idea.
I like Petreus image with more than one colour. These days designers favour monotone as the norm, if i want grey tones I only need look out the window at the weather! (Yep, not California based for me ;-) )
@DS, my image is too small (not tall enough) for cafepress... :-/ I'll see if I can't size up the background and give it another go.
Wow, that was fast:
Ellison Chan has sent you a message on DIY Drones
Subject: Also...
I strongly urge you to remove your last comment, as it contains profane language, and this is not a board for that. We have no age limit, and there may be minor age children on this board.

I will NOT remove my post as it contains no profane language. To have "balls" is to have courage. Minors hear worse everyday at school and on television. You may ban me if you wish but as you know, banning the handle does not ban the person. This may not be the place for this - that is why I stayed out until you banned J - but others need to see your self-aggrandizement and how you react to things you don't agree with. Remember, you're just a moderator, you're not a god.
Thanks guys! I think Jimmy Hendrix would have put a speaker on his and flown it around powered by sheer amplified sound.
DS, that's a great Idea, I'll try uploading in the morning... I'm laughing thinking about the look I'd get driving this around the East Bay!
LOL!
You should buy a "Predator" model and paint it up like that.
Can we please keep in mind the fact that DIYDrones is not a support community for 3DRobotics? If you have a problem with 3DR, please contact them directly instead of taking it out on the wider DIYDrones community. If you really feel like putting it on here, please have the courtesy to do so by: a) Not hijacking a thread that obviously has nothing to do with 3DR and b) to do so in a normal, civilized manner. There is no need to start throwing around random insults. Insulting moderators who just trying to do their job of keeping the content of the site within the site's policies and who have no affiliation with 3DR whatsoever, will not help you in your cause. What ever it maybe.
The amount of grief caused by KernalPanic, DroneSavant and other accounts in this community is unbelievable. I once again ask everyone to not take whatever grievances they might have with 3DRobotics out on the members (or moderators) of the wider 3DRobotics.

And my Berkeley-inspired entry. Show this to the next person afraid of your scary killer drone!
@J, here's the situation:
- I've made exactly two edits to your posts. They are both marked "[text deleted by moderator. author notified]." I've made no other modifications to your posts.
- You must accept my friend request to receive notifications of these edits. These notifications include the elided text and a pointer to the site policies. Since you have not responded I cannot send you the notifications.
- Drone Savant's suggestion is good. There's a section for rants and raves.

- Keep in mind that the site policies still apply there. Since you didn't accept my friend request I'll remind you of the site policies here.

Mike, I like your layouts, they really speak to the DIY spirit of the community.
Most might find this one a little busy, but it's hard to incorporate much of a message in the tiny space of a header.
Good work, very visually friendly.
