A video showing 3D models made with images from a Go Pro camera mounted on a DJI Phantom. Photos were uploaded to Autodesk's Photo on Recap 360, and the cloud service automatically created accurate 3D models and point clouds with textures. The basic process:
- Set the Go Pro Camera to timelapse photo mode
- Fly around the object to get pictures from different angles (every 5-10 degrees).
- Select the best photos (up to 250)
- Upload the photos to Autodesk's Recap360
- Download your model!

@Jack, interesting point you make. It reminds me of a company I interviewed for a number of years ago. They were a CNC production machining shop for the auto industry. They specialized in machining brass components. The business model was, the customer sources the raw brass casting, and provides it to the CNC company. The CNC company did the finish machining for free. They made their money because they got to keep the brass chips, and sold the brass for scrap. The scrap value was higher than the cost to do the machining.
Aha, thanks. Exciting times!
Photo on Recap 360 is similar to 123D Catch, but can make higher resolution textures and models using more photos. 123D Catch is geared toward iphone and ipad photos (but can use photos from any camera) whereas Photo on Recap360 is geared towards DSLR cameras or scenes captured with larger amounts of photos.
Is this better than 123D?
They're going to make a lot of money on all that user submitted data. Imagine if every camera was implemented as a cloud service & every photo ever taken had to be uploaded to a data center before it could be viewed.
