New mobile interface for DIY Drones!

Ning (the platform we're hosted on) has just rolled out a new mobile interface in beta, which I've enabled. The main screen is the Activity Feed, with the various content categories available as menu items. Please give it a try on your phone and let me know what you think. (I can't change it, but I can give the Ning team feedback).

  • It's not that bad.  There's always the "Top Content " and "groups" in the right margin.

Wish I this the other day, sitting in the doctor's waiting room.

Paul, good points. What we're planning on doing is breaking ArduCopter and ArduPlane onto their own sites, with a combination of a better user manual and better forum software. Meanwhile, DIYD (which was intended to be a blog-led social network, not just a forum) can return to its main focus, which is information, news and idea sharing for the whole amateur UAV community, without being overwhellmed by tech support or discussion of any one platform.

As much as I value RCG, it is just a forum, which is a good platform for discussion but it a daunting place for newcomers to come up to speed. Forums are also a poor platform for visually-driven news and information, the way a blog-led social network like this can be. I think sites like The Verge are a better example.

Loved it so far! Works fine on Dolphin Browser installed on Galaxy S. Adding this comment from it.
  • One more thing just spotted. Clicking on link in email about new comment does not scroll to that comment after mobile redirect.

  • Understood. So probably would be good to wait a bit for other's opinions and pass them to Ning.

    Thanks for the info.

@Marooned: Just to be clear, I can't change anything. This is being rolled out by Ning, the platform that we're hosted on. All I can do is pass the feedback back to them.

  • Oh yeah, the URL is changed which is bad as I'm saving them on my phone for the reference and reading on PC (using dropbox based apps). It would be the best to leave original URL and store in cookie info that user switched from mobile to desktop view on his phone. Are you able and willing to do such change?

  • I'm reading this site more often on my mobile than on regular PC so this affects me a lot. First thoughts:

    1) Images in comments are not scaled as images in blogs, great example here.

    2) Welcome page is "activity" rather than "blogs" and in my opinion it should be opposite. On regular page also "blogs" are the main and most important part.

So far it looks like a good change. Tested on WiFi and 3g and works nicely. Only noticeable "slowness" is the animation of menu.

Tested on HTC Desire Z with Dolphin HD.

  • so far I love it, Its nice have a quick reference in your pocket, well I was playing and it work great, the slow menu could be my device I have tons of s..... running in the background.

  • navi menu very slow,  will keep playing around to see what more I can find, anyway I love it!!!
