Open source Techpod

Hey everyone!

So this is something I have been wanting to do for a while.

I am ready to pull the trigger and publish the techpod design for everyone to modify or make for themselves. I would like to seek the communities advice. Basically I would like to use CC NY-SA. I am fairly certain it should give me the protection from dis-attribution while at the same time I can give back to the community, but I am no lawyer. So I would like to here what you guys think about the license and it's application to the techpod.

So, you may be asking, what is the point?

well the point is I may be very talented but I have only so much time and resources. I get a lot of interest from academics etc wanting to learn from and some who want to get involved.

Whats is it for me?

Basically I would like to create a group of developers to help further along the project. I intend to create a system by which people can help out and receive serious financial rewards. 3DR is a great example of what I am talking about in this realm. Although you will be free to develop the techpod on your own all you like, only this group will have access to the teams upcoming releases and plans.

What does the future hold for the Techpod and dev team members?

-composite techpod

- techwing

-techpod 2.0

- high endurance helicopter uav

- large gas burner UAV

- infinite endurance electric/solar techpod

So, If you are interested in being part of the team, drop me a PM. I can only allow so many to join the group in the beginning, candidates will be selected on the basis of there skill sets and the projects needs.

here are some areas of expertise that are open:

aerodynamics/CFD analysis, mechanical stress simulation, CAD draftsmen, PCB board design, code development.

I have some housecleaning to do on my files and I would like to hear some feedback but I will be making the files available in a day or two.

Thank you guys so much for helping make my dreams come true and believing in me!

"You guys should make" ? Dude go read the comment right before yours. I addressed this. You should really read before you post.
  • You guys should make up, and start a company named John-Wayne ;). But seriously, i don't know which is the bad actor, i guess both sides have made some unclear moves, but hey if the design is so good, and it can go open source, this might just be the best way possible.

John has plenty of money. he forked up a massive amount of cash to take my design and have it made. If he chose to he could sue me any time. read the rest of the blog look at how much this man talks about spending. I don't have the cash to do so. You have $40g i can borrow?

you can't possibly explain why John won't sue me unless you understand that john obviously does not think he will prevail. we else would he try to say its a different design all together? he even does not deny my right to produce the techpod. all added up his story does not make a bit of sense. even he admits I am not a bad actor At worst he only accuses me of harassment.

Why would a guy in san jose start a company in seychelles and then tell every some one else owns the company?

yes john was stupid not to realize my publicly stated plans of going open source. If he has half a wit he would simply follow the license i will offer him, comply with it and get on with his life.

yes I can have one motive and make my plans independent of how it effects some fool and still get to laugh at the fool.

How it will effect John is Just a fringe benefit. I stated my intention over a year an a half ago.

also I hope you understand I am giving john a way to make techpod. The ball is in his court.

  • Seems you have some "other" motives as well for open sourcing this. Like several other commenters suggested, you really need to end this dispute with John. I dont really know which of you is telling the truth. Take him to court and get it over with. It would once and for all resolve who is the bad actor.

I think it is a great design, but by the time you two are done slugging it out, neither may have anything to show for it. For that reason, i'll wont be purchasing the techpod or the cyclops. There are other models out there that don't have drama built-in.

you are absolutely correct, no IP actually protects you in your definition. All IP is up to the owner to enforce. what I mean is the license requires attribution. John is a bad actor. I am working on my part to police his activities. I think few people understand how he thinks and what he is up to. I am warning the community. This guy is out to take your IP. If yo don't believe me , you can ask dave about his experience with john. He has taken my IP and he will be taking more peoples IP not just mine if people continue to buy his products.

BTW I am making a nice living at this;-)

  • Guy... yes, CC-BY-SA won't protect him. But hey, keeping thing closed source offers NO more protection. Open source is about letting go, not hanging on. Wayne, I say good luck and looking forward to seeing the designs. Scott

    Hey Dave,

your catapults are completely awesome. I can't wait to get mine.

Dave has some awesome skills and will make a great member of the team.  heck I could probably cross off all the need skills with just this guy.

wold love to and have offered as much to john. He has decided not to. I can't control that. Having "cloners" as you put it is the entire point of open source. It is quite a strange meme that has developed concerning that.

I am not doing this for johns sake. I more than realize that this does not change what john will do. I cant control that.

I have been wanting to do this all along. You can read my update from two years ago.

open source for everyone. the dev team will make releases when they are ready for public consumption. well at lest everyone who decides to abide by the license. the techpod is ready to go as is. hopefully hobbyking will take it up. That would be sweet. I made the techpod to change the world. I have had a very hard time getting it into the most needed places. This should help.
