Potentially The Ultimate Compact GCS

I just ran across this this morning on  Engadget, Wired online. It immediately struck me as almost a "holy grail" of tablets to use for a ground control station.  It has plenty of buttons, and 2 joysticks.  We already have the excellent Andropilot app.  Now we have built in controls...  Maybe we should pool some money to send one of these to Kevin Hester.

The only problem is the specs are a little lightweight:

- 7" 1024x600 display, no mention of brightness

- Android 4.1 Jellybean

- Arm Coretex A9 dual-core 1.6 GHz

- 8GB Flash, 1GB Ram, with a microSD card slot

The really good news is it's only $170. It's definitely worth experimenting with.

I'd kick in $20 to send one to Kevin Hester if he's interested in developing it for AndroPilot use.  Anybody else?

@R_Lefebvre - do you know of a source? - the only archos gamepad I see on amazon is $300.

Thanks to Robert's $50 donation we are at $170.  Has anyone seen a cheaper source than $200 for this tablet?  If so, please post a link.  If not, I'll just buy it.  I've already purchased a $39 stand alone gamepad that looked promising.

Thanks Earl, kevinh@geeksville.com - and I think that will be the last sponsor needed ;-).

This is Earl...Like to donate $20 also. How to do it ? I have a PayPal account.

Also Bluetooth is the way I like because it's built in to most Android devices.I have been busy at school so I have not done much on testing BT yet. I am a 67yo student at University of New Mexico.

  • Oh, I have one lying around somewhere from a project. Don't have an android device though.

Just a $3 USB OTG adapter, see here for details: http://diydrones.com/group/andropilot-users-group

  • How does andropilot connect through mavlink? Does it need an adapter?
  • Developer

Michael, if you just want a tablet/phone app you can use Andropilot now - this is mostly to add joystick support in integrated hardware.

  • Similar specs as my smartphone. I am running windows phone 8 flawlessly, though windows phone needs far less power than android. This looks look like a cool project, cheaper than a gcs with a laptop and expensive pelican case.
  • @Kevin: Would this eventually be able to support different Bluetooth game pads or would this be coded for the Snakebyte.

I liked the idea of having a all in one device but in terms of comfort a game pad is ideal. I Think the Wikipad will be a better device for the all in one option but it will come with a pricetag.

Id be happy for Kevin to work on the controller as this will be more flexible and get more people using the product. Perhaps when the Wikipad comes out it will have better sticks.

yeah - the tricky thing is I can't find it anywhere for $170, it seems more like $200.  Anyone have an objection to me adding support for the snakebyte adapter instead (I'll happily refund donations to anyone who wants their money back)?

The reason I say this, is I bet a snakebyte plus a little bracket on a Nexus 7" is a much more usable widget.  Also, I've sent a note to the Wikipad folks and they say that when they have a unit ready for developers they will hook me up so I can add support for that device.
