Announced a new Raspberry:

Today, I’m pleased to be able to announce the immediate availability of Raspberry Pi Zero, made in Wales and priced at just $5. Zero is a full-fledged member of the Raspberry Pi family, featuring:

  • A Broadcom BCM2835 application processor
    • 1GHz ARM11 core (40% faster than Raspberry Pi 1)
  • 512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM
  • A micro-SD card slot
  • A mini-HDMI socket for 1080p60 video output
  • Micro-USB sockets for data and power
  • An unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header
    • Identical pinout to Model A+/B+/2B
  • An unpopulated composite video header
  • Our smallest ever form factor, at 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

With this, shields like the PXF 2.0, NavIO, Raspilot and the one from VirtualRobotix may have a way to cut down costs.

@JB We have not designed a DIY Rpi Hat.

As Victor suggests the PXF 2.0 would be one candidate for the Rpi Zero Hat though one would need to shrink down the size.

  • @JB

You want to go low budget ?

Then an ESP8266 as WIFI and use this chip GPIO as the  4 channels PWM, hence you dont have to add the PCA9685 to drive the servos...can even interface a pitot speed sensor on the ADC for free!!

  • Thx Linus. I agree. I can't remember if you or Mirko ever tried to do a shield for the Raspi?

Just been looking at the sensors on Ali; the MS5611 cost $8 and the MPU9250 $5, RTL8188 wifi module with ext. ant $8. Need a GPS module preferably with mag (from $14) too and a USB camera still.

Wifi module looks like this and can be mounted sideways directly on a carrier pcb without pins:

I"m still looking for the zero schematics...google must be broke or somethin.  :-(

@JB the bare BBBmini BOM should be around 40-50€ depending on where you get things from (china vs. locally) and in which quantity.

Being able to use the camera would be huge benefit!

  • Lol You mean a Eierlegende Wollmilchsau!! ;-)

The eggs are just as important otherwise this thing will never fly!

BTW Linus off the top of your head do you know what's the BOM cost for the BBBmini parts?

I've been looking for the pi zero schematics to see what the pads on the back are for. So wished it had the raspi camera pins routed out. I'm also wondering if the second power micro USB port can also be used as a normal USB when its powered by the GPIO, but probably not as it would need a hub onboard.

Hardware config would be a high powered 8188 wifi connected to the USB, along with a cheapy 720 USB cam, a USB hub, and of course the zeroapm shield. That way we get FPV, AP, linux FC and telemetry all for under $60. I'd buy a three dozen and mobilize my whole squadron!! Swarm a la cheapo! ;-)

  • Not only that, but they are getting closer and closer to "bump in a cable" size. :)

  • I find it funny that, we are arriving to a point where shipment costs are greater than the product itself.

Great board btw, I would like to see myself how powerful is!

Wollmilchsau.pngI want such Wollmilchsau shield for the rpi zero as well :)

  • Can we make a ~$30 sensor shield to turn it into a Linux APM?

Who wants to give it a whirl? I'm in.
