The flame arrester is placed in the box lid by design, as the act of opening and closing the box ensures a clear area around the exhaust holes to further help prevent the chance of a house fire.

Prototype testing

With this box you can charge lithium batteries at home unattended in complete safety. To prove my point I set the BAT-SAFE in a cardboard box full of tissue paper to verify that even in this extremely flammable environment the box would perform as designed.

And it worked. In the testing process, I have deliberately overcharged dozens of lipo batteries to the point of exploding. This included batteries of all shapes and sizes, from small to very large. As the design deprives the fire of oxygen, the temperatures inside the BAT-SAFE are reduced further helping to prevent a home fire.

    It's actually $49 once you include shipping to the US for those interested. Still going to back the project but it would be good to know final costs with shipping since in this case, shipping essentially increases the price roughly 45% for even US based backers.

    @Darius, I suppose we should only charge batteries outdoors, possibly in outer space, where there is no air, for safety reasons. I'm certain fiberglass particles are dangerous as you state if ingested. I used to slide in large, scrap fiberglass pipe growing up that we had from my dad's job. It definitely made my skin itchy upon contact. Did you know how "contact with human's skin, eyes, human's lungs" from a lithium battery fire (once it consumes your house and sets you on fire) is also just as dangerous, if not more so than the fiberglass particles? I'm going to declare now that LiPo batteries should NOT be charged, used, stored, or kept anywhere indoors. In the off chance it goes up in flames, there could be lots of issues...In fact, even NiMH or NiCd batteries could do the same freaking thing! Wait, my alkaline batteries might cause a fire too! All my kids toys!!!! What will they do while I'm at work when I can't save them????? OH MY! WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF MY CHILDREN!!!!! CRAP! THE WIRING IN MY HOUSE COULD SET THE HOUSE ON FIRE AND SO COULD MY GAS RANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE, SOMEONE SAVE ME BEFORE I CATCH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

    eyes, human's lungs, you prefer not to use indoor any invention of this kind, which can emit

    fiberglass micro particles, contaiminating your home, irritating your skin, eyes, lungs.
