Washington (CNN) The man operating the drone that crashed on the White House grounds called the U.S. Secret Service on Monday morning to "self-report" his involvement in the incident.
The drone's owner and operator is a government employee who said he was using the drone recreationally, a Secret Service source told CNN. He was interviewed by Secret Service agents and has been fully cooperative, Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said in a statement Monday afternoon.
"Initial indications are that this incident occurred as a result of recreational use of the device," Leary said.
The Secret Service locked down the White House shortly after 3 a.m. after an officer on the south grounds of the White House spotted the drone, described as a two-foot wide "quad copter," flying above the White House grounds before crashing on the southeast side of the complex. The officer saw the drone flying at a very low altitude.
The drone was believed to have flown over the White House residence after taking off in a neighborhood east of the White House, a Secret Service source told CNN.
A second source said the flight path had not been fully confirmed by investigators.
The Secret Service will continue to investigate the incident through "corroborative interviews, forensic examinations and reviews of all other investigative leads," Leary said.

sooo.... this is actually getting pretty bad. A lot of publicity now
He was drunk too!
Seems that the Phantom was flown by a government employee.
what a self centre stupid p***k. soz if u r offended by my swearing but its goin to get to a point where the FAA or CAA ban flying of (drones) model quads/hexas completely. Its simple folks. To teach these idiots put them in prison. This will teach these idiots not to fly in dangerous places like the fecking white house! or near a airport and such. There is a lot of info for these dicks and yet they carry on blind to the fact they are casing A a danger to people and property and B DESTROYING this hobby!
I personally have applied to the CAA (uk) for a exemption for to fly commercially for a year at a expensive of £113 and that to me is a lot of money! This is beacause the CAA have to make sure im not a idiot unlike some. But this practice obviously takes time and money. Hence the price! I for one am sick and tired of these idiots. If I ever see them doing this ide report them to the CAA or FAA asap!
If the White House spoofed GPS signals to defend against unwanted Phantoms, the pizza delivery would be delayed
As much as I enjoy bashing on Phantom owners, I wonder if there is some sort of electronic defense at the White House that spoofs GPS signals? I know such devices exist. If so then the Phantom's GPS lock could have been totally hosed and it was a government induced flyaway. I'm real curious where it's actual launch point was. As moronic as the pilot was I can't imagine he was stupid enough to fly over or near the White House.
Too fast too agressive too coordinated too massive
they needed any excuse ...

Drone flying in restricted area like airports airports, govt objects etc prohibited in all world.
But accidental case will always occur.
Сould be someone or something harm through *this violation?
Yep , operator must be punished for flying drones in the wrong place, But what?
Obstructed, jailed or fine for 1000000000 bucks? U really want such laws?
*Terrorists don't folow any law. *Accindental flights don't make threat security.
Morrons who make histeria on such news just want antidrone law like what make thailand hunta lol
As easy as the Phantom is to fly, I am surprised that even somebody who didn't realize flying over the White House was a bad idea, is actually able to pilot it. That speaks volumes about just how good the DJI system is. Bravo to them.
