'Simpler' Andropilot 1.8 released to production

Hi ya'll,

Thanks to Luciano Zanchi, Gary Mortimer and Remigijus this new release is now out to production.

The main features compared to the last GA release:

  • Substantially simplified user interface (the sidebar now gets hidden by default in landscape mode - if you want it back, just choose 'Show Sidebar' in the menu).  Most interesting data floats over the map view.
  • Bluetooth and on-screen joystick improvements for safety and response rate
  • More time spent with the profiler, should be even faster than old versions
  • Special UIs for phones with small screens

If you would like to use the bluetooth or on screen joysticks, please be extra careful because that code has been used by less than 2% of the users.  If you need to grab control away with the RC xmitter, just toggle the mode switch or press the cancel button on the tablet/joystick.

Here's Luciano's review of this feature:

Flown 3 lipos controlling copter with Andropilot only using new icons and joysticks. RC radio left only for emergency. Everything OK in STAB, LOITER, GUIDED, LAND, etc.

IMHO this version can be promoted to GA...perhaps with some notice for beeing careful with [Arm] icon

Ciao

The beta release chain will now be focused on testing/developing scripting for GCS and vehicle operations.  If you are interested in being on the bleeding edge.  Join this G+ group and opt-in.

Of course any feedback/code-fixes/questions are welcome here or here or here ;-).

Thanks so much - this particular release was a lot of fun to futz with...

IMO, it would be helpful if the android control programs tried to resemble the mission control software more. From what I saw there are still plenty of functions that require me to use (or are much easier on) the laptop

Hi Ben,

Sure thing - my emphasis on Andropilot initially was on 'just doing the stuff that I needed at the field'.  But as the features have grown it has been a long time since I needed to run mission planner.  What features would you like added?

Kevin, had a great couple flights with it this evening. Two small issues/wishlist items:

1) When you change parameters, it's not clear how or when they are sent to the vehicle and the display doesn't update to show the new values. It might be good to have a "Save" button to make clear when the values are written and "Refresh" button so you can confirm that they're correct.

2) A little cosmetic bug: When you're connected via the 3DR radios and press "Disconnect" it says "Disconnect Bluetooth".

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the feedback.

Re #1)

Parameter changes are always written to the vehicle immediately (asking the vehicle to confirm the write).  Andropilot then reads the value back and puts it into the parameter list.  So unless it pops up a dialog saying there was a problem the effect is guaranteed to be 'in' immedately/no need to save/refresh.  Cool?

Re #2) Good point.  I was kinda torn about the idea of even including a disconnect button when using the 3dr radios (possibly just leaving the 'unplug to disconnect' metaphor).  I'll fix.

RE: #1, then I guess the screen isn't refreshing? For some reason it doesn't show the new values until I go do something else for a while ;-)

k 1.8.07 going out (to fix the odd problem about that bluetooth message - Chris, did you use this tablet to connect to any bluetooth serial devices in the past?  That's only thing I think that could have exposed this bug)

Yes, I did use that tablet to connect to APM via Bluetooth before. Worked great, FWIW ;-)

yep - I think I have a problem with the multi vehicle (alphaish) support and it gets confused about past bluetooth connections.  alas ;-)

Not sure but would be nice to have separate throttle and rudder joys on display. Now while playing with rudder control it's a bit too easy to change throttle too and as we don't have EXPO on tablet, effect from minor miscontrol can get dangerous.

Another is that we should have "Don't let display sleep" option in settings. Just like many navigator softwares have.

Agreed on "don't sleep" option! I got caught out on that today. Scary moment of typing in my PIN while copter flew away ;-)
