1 month before, after my Shenzen,China trip, i found out that there is a way to make a drone plane for a very low cost to make it achievable by everyone. After a little bit search on internet, it is clear that people love Raspberry Pi. there are a lot of project on DIY Drone blog with a drone raspberry Pi attached.I decided to make a low cost autonomous airplane that everybody can write code and make applications without spending a lot of money on prototyping, etc.

And i would like to give a brief introduction about my project Dronee.

Low cost (200-300 $), open-source,open-design (3d printable as well), and Raspberry Pi2 inside for 3rd party applications. for image processing, etc

Airframe has light weigh durable advanced structure that can be printable from SLS ,high precision printers, but it is not cost efficient because i checked the price from Shapeways &materialise  it is around 1000$ . I am ging to build from molded EPP or EPO, i will test both.

I havent finished working prototype yet, but i am working hard to show working prototype untill end of july.

Purpose of publishing here in DIY Drone, i want to share my project with the people who love drones , who work with drones,and how are interested in drones, And i want to get valuable feedback to improve the dronee to make it better

All your ideas (positive or negative) are valuable for me.

  • Gary Mortimer, yeah they are professionalized on airfoil designing. but first you need to give them estimated information they needed to make good optimized airfoil.

    Do they have aerofoils for flying wings on that site? Looking at aerofoil overview is would seem they specialize in glider foils.     That's an interesting aerofoil for a flying wing, not much reflex on it. What is its NACA?

    I am working hard to make a flight test in this month. making flying wing stable is my challenge ;) 

    and middle part actually acts as a vertical stabilizer, and  will be modular.. the autopilot,batteries, all electronics to run airplane autonomously lactate inside the wing cover.

    1) Rapsberry pi is not to run autopilot, it is for 3rd party application. Autopilot runs on different board connected to raspberry pi. right now i cannot give detail about autopilot hardware which i am trying to make it as cheap as possible.. but airframe will be compatible with pixhawk as well. 

    2)Wing area is 0.11m2, sapn is 76 cm. . and the body part, where raspberry pi located it will be modular,, means you can change the hardware easily, without changing airplane.  here you can see how i made it light .the 3d printed sample, half of wing  is  70 gram.

    3) Control surfaces close to body, because all electronics inside the body, including servos. why i did like this,, because i am also planning make it detachable wings. connecting servo cable each time inst nice

    4) Of course i Am planning to make bigger version, but right now .i am limited with budget, and making bigger modl is very expensive for me still. and purpose here to make it compact low cost and programmable droen development kit.

    5) still I am waiting for registration of my domain www.dron.ee.. it will be active until 24 of July.

    I will share the CAD file on Fusion 360 for small changes , such as small camera holder, sensor attachment places etc..  But still 3D printing is not the cost effective way.

    Has the design be flight tested yet?

    I understand the design goal, making room for camera, rpi, batteri etc, but flying wings are very very picky when it comes to having a stable and efficient flight envelope. The bottom drag just seems 'off' to me. Especially since there are no winglets.

  • Nice project! I have a few questions:

    1) Why orient the Pi vertically? That fuselage is going to add a great deal of drag to the system. Wouldn't it be better to rotate that 90 degrees? Also, it might be a good idea to think about allowing extra room above the pi for hats, like the Navio+.

    2) 450g seems really low for the system with a wing made of SLS nylon. What is the span and wing area? I'm testing an sls nylon wing now that has an area of .4 m^2 and has a mass of around 1.2kg (just the printed parts of the wing!). Even a .1m^2 wing would be 300 grams, which is 2/3 of the gross mass listed. Add in the Pi, an autopilot, motor and batteries and you'll likely be at around 800g at least.

    3) Why are the control surfaces inboard? Seems like it would be better to push them out a bit for roll and pitch authority. You could also just make them the length of your wing.

    4) Since this is a 3D printed plane, have you thought about making a geometry generator? Say I want to flight a slightly heavier payload, it would be great if I could just scale the aircraft up to get a slightly larger wing. This is much easier said than done, but it would be a really neat feature.

    5) Can you share your website address so we can all follow your progress?

    I love to see 3D printed drones. It's tough to make work, but stick with it. Someday 3D printing drones will be the preferred way of making new airframes (fingers crossed at least!).
