The end of gimbals?

I know that gimbals are really cool and make great things possible, but I just can't wait for them to die. They are heavy, draggy and add complexity. It would be great to just record everything and then scroll to the portion on video you want to see. If you are capturing video for a production, you can fix it in post. If you are doing surveillance, you could completely stabilize your view with software. Maybe this will get us one step closer:

  • @mP1: We're talking about eliminating the need for mechanical gimbaling by performing the same thing in software.

  • Article forgets that gimbals are great for fpv.

  • I am sure that tripod-like, rock solid stabilization through software is possible if you have captured all of the pixel information.  Mechanical stabilization will always have limitations.

  • If it resolves the jello, vibrations and other issues maybe this is the end of gimbals.

  • Wow that is nice, nice that it removes the distortion...
  • That is definitely the way to go.

I do a little CCTV for my IT work are are looking into this

Similar idea. Full 360 view, onboard processing and storage. And removes all of the fish eye effect.
