I finally have found some time and good weather conditions to try my new quadcopter.

Unfortunately, it was absolutely not like I thought it would.

After few attempts (three), I noticed that it was not well "balanced" and has the tendency to fly sideways.

But then, the unexpected happens. It took off by it self. I wasn't touching anything on the remote and went up a meter and half before I decided to take it down using the sticks to not to lose it.

Here are some pictures that I took after the crash.

Anyway, it seems like I will not be flying it any time soon as many bolts broke and I can't get my hand on any soon.

I hope you guys have an idea and can help me understand what really happened!

Cheers!

Saad

  • I think logs would likely be helpful, it taking off on it's own would indicate it did think some form of input was given, or it went for auto-takeoff and waypoint nav possibly. Which flightmode were you in?

When it took off in it's own, did it have a direction or was it just going upwards straight?

  • What board are you using? I see a GPS module. Maybe get rid of the bells and whistles and start  out more basic. Is it possible you have one of your switches set to something like altitude hold and it decided to fly there for you? Strip it down do just basic flight control and stabilization. You may be trying to deal with way too complicated before you're ready for it.

Have you done a CG check? Have you calibrate your ESC's so they're all in sync? Also, use your trims to level it before you take off. All 4 motors should be lifting off at the same time.

How are your motors attached to the frame? Looks like you had them bolted/screwed? If you zip tie them to the frame, the zip ties break in a crash and your motors and props take less damage. I also tape  wooden dowels to the ends of my frame that extend past the tips of the props.  Saves props when it tips.
