UAVs can be used to watch the watchers, too

People tend to assume that UAVs will be used by the police to keep watch on us, but as this video, taken by a RoboKopter of riots in Warsaw, shows, they can equally be used by citizens to keep tabs on the police. No need to wait for the local news to send a helicopter to get the aerial scene of a demonstration, just Do It Yourself!

  • I don't know about Poland, but if a policeman in Canada takes a gun out, and just shoots willy nilly in the air at something flying around, it would be in all the news.  Police normally will no open fire without cause.  Real life is not like the movies.

Besides, if anyone's done any bird hunting, it's not so easy to shoot anything down from the air, living or human controlled.

That craft looks quite sturdy, and professionally made to carry an expensive DSLR up there. So whomever it belonged to was most likely skilled at flying and building it.  I wouldn't recommend that for everyone, since having a drone dropping out of the air into a crowd, while all those policemen are around would not be a booster for our hobby.

@Fab, Your comment makes sense and I woudl post the same 1 year ago. What disturbs me you got 300 more serious cases on youtube. Simple 'kids don't do this at home' is not enough, we have to rethink it all. The guy that flew it is receiving better local press than people that didn't. The danger is real, the danger is there, the results are impressive, the laws were violated, the laws are as outdated as the rest of the stinking+shrinking economy. Now what do we do?

  • @krzysztof. you misunderstand some things. I was commenting on this post and the video in the post. I am not going to respond to the rest of your comments and do not know you. When a child is killed in a crash that was travelling in one of the cars you describe how will you feel? I am sorry, I know you are a nice guy, but I can't describe in words how dangerous your comments are.

I think this entire post should be removed especially because it was posted by the person who has set himself up as a figurehead of fpv. Furthermore, because it has been posted and read by so many a statement should be added to the diyd home page reminding people of the importance of safety. Is it me? Am I goind mad? Doesn't this post seem crazy?

Your concerns are well founded, but you have seen little. Your complaints are misdirected, I didn't flew it. Every kid in Europe basically flies above cars all the time immediately aftery buying FPV set and yet somehow the hobby rolls well and the drivers, so far, greet the planes and divert their attention to those random object as effectively as they looked on the sides of road looking for red-dressed girls or accidents for decades.

I am not flying even above urban areas, BTW. I estimate the danger of this specific flight was very little, but with great potential of being very dangerous once the riots woudl go really wild and TV helicopters into action, people running in random way across the streets. Yet, it was basically 3 min over emptied street and protected police.

  • Oh and if there was a riot on the time you would certainly go to prison, it if hit one of those well protected police men you will be arrested for assaulting a police officer. It is totally and without a doubt the most fool hardy post that I have ever seen

  • Funny man, it's illegal to monitor police radio for the same reason. I am sure you will be arrested for endangering life, perverting the course of justice, obstruction of justice and many more reasons. And who is walking near by? Not just the police.

Relaaax, the people below are who? Mobile police riot assault units. The best armoured civilian formation in western world country model.

  • In most countries it is illegal to fly these machines above or close to people. In this
case, because the rotors are open and not surrounded by anything that will
protect humans it is absolutely irresponsible! If you do this our hobby will be banned.

  • Your right, when the filmed event is something sensational from close range the quality is not an issue.

Here we have just a overview, no faces, no action no sensation no buyer :)

Commercial TV stations have very rigid requirements for video quality and they try to avoid post processing, or there is no time for that.  In this case i suspect pilot is not honest about selling, or he just set the price to high.

Hmm, when we were making a documentary movie with Pteryx they said no problem, we have deshaking software. It was a local TV. Something is below the surface...

I think if you would make a movie of a policeman beating anybody when he should not, filmed with a wet cellphone, they would publish it. In this case simply nothing brutal happened. Dropping a bottle of ketchup should solve the issue next time ;-)
