Agree with Randy, but this should be done with regulations first proposed and then properly voted by congress, after proper notices of rule making, etc ... Not ad-hoc, not when the FAA was ordered by congress not to regulate model aircraft, and especially not three years after congress tasked the FAA to come up with UAS regulations (and 8 years (!) after the FAA first started the process.

My biggest problem with this power grab is not the registration itself. It's the fact that the FAA is doing this without any act of congress or new laws being passed - it's a bureaucratic power grab, on plane with the POTUS executive orders that opened the borders. They claim that they are just enforcing existing law by applying the already-existing rules to drones, but what they fail to explain is why didn't they apply the law to UAV's in the past, literally for decades they have never tried to claim that hobby planes or copters fell under these rules. Therefore their dereliction of enforcement over the years was an ad-hoc admission that they did not have the jurisdiction to do what they are doing, otherwise they would have done it when congress enacted the rules.
So why now are they moving to re-classify drones to be treated as if they were civil aircraft? Simpy because it's more popular and is affordable to the common man, and just like real aircraft, they don't want the 'common man' in their club. Get the picture? The 'general pubic' cannot be trusted with such freedom, which is why they want to take away the guns too - you are not trustworthy with such freedoms - because you are sheep. And sheep can't fly or shoot.
General aviation has been, since the beginning, the realm of the elite, and they control the air. This is a move to tell all of you sheep that they control you. They are peeing on your tree, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

I would've agreed with you if not for a few simple facts:
- We've been flying RCs for over 80 years.
- Local and FAA laws are strict enough to punish people.
- If someone wants to hide their identity - they will. FAA does not require to engrave registration on DJI drone at the time of the purchase and does not require Credit Card to purchase it.
- with current opinion on a drone issue there will be no shortage of people ready to report you to the police in your local park or elsewhere.
- there is a valid statistics that birds cause major aircraft strikes and no strikes by RC planes or drones. How do we license birds? Give it time and we all be paying for Government program to count all birds besides paying for TSA and overpriced airport security.
You like to pay for phony professionals that make no difference in this World - your choice.
Registration will not bring any accountability at all if person means harm, only hurtles to those who obeys the Law.

My two cents on this.. I don't think it's a bad thing that drones are registered. If we're going to have millions and millions of new pilots, there are going to be a lot of them who don't know what they're doing and then do very silly, dangerous things. Some accountability is a good thing.
Obviously unreasonable restrictions against where people can fly is not good but a registration by itself doesn't seem so bad to me.

Being a responsible drone flyer I think this is ridiculous - I'm current on my AMA stuff, I've registered for $15 with the local county for the local fly field, and I only fly in designated AMA/county fly fields.
However, a part of me also knows that tons of idiots will put others at risk as this grows in popularity. But, how does registration protect anyone from idiots? It just seems like another way to burden the tax payer and an agency overstepping authority. Nothing else.
Depending how this plays out I may just make my drones wall art.... and switch to building rovers. GOV can eff off.
I fly my RCs over a private property with owner permission being a Private Pilot and a former military pilot. Many times I had to avoid small aircraft flying over on a very low altitude by either landing or getting away well ahead of time. At no time there was a situation where my RC planes posed any danger to a full scale.
At the same time I did see with my own eyes (and once captured on my camera) when power aircraft flew over a glider airport and had a near-miss with full-scale gliders flying in well-known location above the airport's runway.
I did contact my Senator regarding the FAA drone registration - surprise, he is not aware of it.
Things get even better, I talked to my friend the other day and he said he'd shoot a drone operator as drones invade his privacy (???!!).
People base their opinion on media reports and mass media reporting things based on opinion of the "professionals".
I am not registering my RC planes. I feel that AMA membership is way more than enough. I am sure AMA will report its members to the FAA one way or another. That happens - I'll stop my AMA membership as well.
A $50 million drone registration website will have issues for years like Obama Care website and we have to pay for it? If none registers I wonder what they'll do? Arrest anybody with Futaba radio?
And yes, should my RC cars have a license plate, insurance and a state inspection sticker too? Nice! If car runs away and wonders on a local road - it may cause an accident! Give it time and it will be a reality if we keep giving away our rights!
I witnessed an actual near miss a couple months ago. Some people were doing Real Estate photography of a house across the street from me (what are the odds?). Some guys from my local club doing this little side business. Fully permitted according to our regulations.
They were flying at about 300 feet and climbing, when suddenly an RCAF C-17 Hercules burst over the rooftops VERY low, below 500 feet. I live about 8 miles from a large airbase. They have a 5 mile restricted flight zone around the base, but they are always flying VERY low even outside that radius. They had to drop the hexacopter fast to get out of the way. It was actually very close.
The fault was actually with the C-17. I agree, a big part of the problem is manned aviation breaking the rules. But UAV's will take the blame.
