With the number of SORTIEs flown each day in the sand box, I'll bet the numbers would end in favor of drones... But who looks at numbers? It's much more exciting to report a drone out of control...
Eish another Predator went down in Iraq on the 15th, missed that one. The military are giving a fine demonstration of how difficult integrating large UAS into civil airspace will be.
Love the idea of a Reaper decal Condor made me chuckle first thing in the morning. Not been a good week with the loss of a Predator at Holloman as well. But against the thousands of hours these things are flying its not bad.
I expect they did'nt want the missiles that the Reaper would have been carrying to end up anywhere unexpected either.
I don't know why they did'nt try switching it on or off again or CTRL ALT DEL
This does raises some interesting ideas about setting up boundry conditions or rather "self-destruct," zones for flights rather than just a basic program to self-destruct when you cross a given line.
Seems especially necessary if you have one person flying packs of UAV.
Does anyone ever remember hearing what caused the failsafe to kick in during the Lockheed Polecat development crash in '07?
The quick google search was basically the same info seen in these news and interview pieces:
