About Me:

I am an entrepreneur with 11 years of Unmanned Aircraft Systems design and development experience. I am passionate about aviation and building functional, simple and beautifully designed products. My core strengths are product development, project management and team development. Technical development competencies: - advanced mechatronic systems (aerial and ground based), - mechanical and electronic systems architecture (safety, performance, ease of use), - control algorithms, Kalman filters, flight management systems, - embedded systems, - system's mechanical design and CAD engineering, - safety case and requirements compliance.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I am the CEO and CTO of a commercial high-performance UAS development company (www.airnamics.com).

Marko Thaler commented on Marko Thaler's blog post Hybrid FPV racer
"We'll definitely develop a really simple and robust airframe with a snap-on wing. Pylon racers are extremely fragile. We had to quite substantially reinforce the stock wing on the prototype. Also the airfoil is not optimized for speed and wing-load…"

"What do you suggest to include in the open source platform?

Pixracer Autopilot & power distribution board (for powering all periphery components) integrated into one PCB,
slimmed down PX4ESCs that connect directly into the main autopilot board…"

"John, I completely agree with you! I think the question that was lost in the thread is about adding gaming aspects to the usual FPV track racing (as stated in my initial post). This brings additional strategy layer into play because you have to fly…"

"I've received a couple of questions through other channels and wanted to post the answers here as well. Maybe somebody will find it useful.
For manual mode any FC for racing quads with suitable firmware could be used to control the hybrid racer. You…"

"Answers to JB's questions 5 and 6:

We do not use reverse thrust for added control authority. No need to.
In FBW throttle mode the additional lift from the vertical motors/props that are used for attitude control is compensated for with reduced lift…"

"A very quick answer - I'll post a more detailed one later if needed:

There are no active control surfaces on the wings - the motor arms are mounted over the factory cut aileron surfaces so you can not move them even if you would put a servo in.
I…"

"The answers to your questions:

There are no movable control surfaces on the racer. If you do not need extreme dynamics / torque vectoring, movable control surfaces in horizontal flight are significantly more efficient.
Racer was in manual mode on…"

"Thanks for the compliments! Our startup is in a funny situation - all the IP was initially developed for the Airnamics R5 UAS. Because of lagging legislation for such a high-performance UAS (60kg MTOM), we put the R5 program on hold (end of 2013). A…"

In Airnamics we wanted to do something just for fun and make an FPV racer that is a cross between a multi rotor and a fixed wing. It opens up completely new performance capabilities because you can use the wing as the main lift device, an air break,…
