OSDs

I like the idea of using a HUD in when flying FPV, but how is this done? I found the Remzibi OSD at the diy store. Is this what is used to make videos like this: http://diydrones.com/profiles/blogs/a-newbies-guide-to-uavs

Can this be used with the Xbee radios for transmitting form the plane to the laptop, or does it use its own transmitter/ reciever?

  • I also found these two:

maybe these two, being 600mw, will work better? these are their specs:

SMA Antenna connector, with supplied 5.8GHz antenna.
    Frequencies: 5740, 5760, 5780, 5800, 5820, 5840, 5860MHz
Fully compatible with 2.4GHz R/C radios
On-board quiet switching regulator, powers 5v cameras (including HD versions)

    Specs:
    Weight: 24 grams (0.9oz)
    Size: 57 x 34mm
    Input voltage range: 6~16v
    Camera Power Supply: 300mA / 5v
    Video Input: 1Vpp, 75 Ohms

    Rx:

     Channel frequency 1~8: 5705/5685/5665/5645/5885/5905/5925/5945mhz.
    Receiver operating voltage: 5VDC
    Operating temp: -10~85C
    Video bandwidth: 0~8.0MHz
    Audio frequency: 6.5MHz
    Video input level: 0.8~1.2Vp-p
    Video input impedance: 75Ohm
    Audio input level: 0.5~2.0Vp-p
    Audio input impedance: 10K/Ohm

    Antenna connector: SMA

  • Does anybody know about an alternative to Remzibi video board? I found this one:

it's 5.8 ghz, so it will work fine with the 900 mhz of the xbees and the 2.4 ghz of most users radios, it's around 80 dollars, from rcgroups... seems good to me! the only question I have is if it can be used with that popular RCA to USB adapter that I have seen in some other blogs. this adapter takes the analogue video feed from the Rx and converts it to digital (I guess?) and this way, this video feed can be used in Mission Planner's main window.

    thanks to everyone!

  • Using the OSD pro, do I need the GPS and elogger? It seems like it would be more accurate and efficient if the OSD ran off the same GPS feed as the Ardupilot. Plus it is way more expensive to buy it all together...
  • So can I buy just the OSD Pro by itself and use the sensors for ardupilot to feed it data? It sounds like RVOSD is a standalone autopilot- is there anyway to use it with ardupilot?
  • It can either be mixed into the video feed and then transmitted by the video downlink, or transmit the data from the gyros/gps/etc to the ground station and mix it after it comes out of the video receiver.

The second method is a bit more complicated (as it needs an advanced GS) but has the advantage of being recordable without the HUD data. In theory you could get away without a HUD if you are happy to just have a laptop or text LCD based set of instruments that read the data off the xbee module direct.
