Lets say theoretically that I sent a plane up into the upper atmosphere and had it return under autopilot via waypoints to home.

What are the limits of Ardupilot control parameters / Mission planner waypoint altitude / IMU performance / barometer range / GPS etc.?

On this point, if I where to want to climb to 1km, is it better to do it via multiple waypoints, climing in stages, or would one waypoint suffice?

Just the 60,000 foot limit built into all civilian GPS.
