Hi FPVrecon,
According to a reply I got from Chris Anderson,
you can cut both the Red (+) & Black (-) wires between the ESC
and APM2, leaving only the PWM signal wire (white) connected,
as the full system has a shared ground (black).

I am about to do a very similar thing to you except I was going to use a OPTO ESC which gets around any potential noise issues but answer your question do not connect the return (if your ESC has a BEC) shown in your diagram

Slowly getting the parts in place for my own APM2 Octo, and first ever.
Made this wiring diagram just to make sure I got all the parts right,
thogh since I will be using A UBEC, I still have a question (yellow mark)
regarding the right way to go about this.
