Differences between old 3DR radio and V2 radio?

I've search around some and can find no postings that list the differences between the old 3DR radio and the new V2 version.

I see from the store page that the new radio comes with a case and there is a single radio for both air and ground - both have a USB connector.

Other than that are there other advantages over the original 3DR radio?  I see one posting that mentions better shielding.  Any other performance improvements?

I'm trying to decide if I should use the 3DR radio I have now or purchase a new V2 3DR radio for the Pixhawk that just arrived.

The only issue I see right now is creating a wiring harness to fit the Pixhawk.  I didn't know if there was some new feature where the V2 radio should be the only version used with the Pixhawk.

  • Thank you for the replies.  I was mainly curious if there is a performance difference where the V2 is better than the V1.  For example longer range.  I read in one posting that the V2 radio has shielding that the V1 radio does not have which would be of benefit.

I have a new Pixhawk and was wondering if there was a good reason to purchase a V2 radio for it (other than more connectivity options) .  I know I will need a wiring adapter for the V1 radio to work so it's not plug and play like a V2 radio which is a minor issue.

    • Hi,

Do you know if V1 is compatible with v2? My v1 air unit died and would like to know if I can use the v1 ground module for backup with a v2 unit? Ordered the new v2 one, have not received it yet so would like to know it before I receive them :)

      Regards

Did you get your new radio v2 yet and do you know if it works with the v1 system? I want to get a v2 my self for my antenna tracker. I hear it's wireless via Bluetooth which will clean up some wires.
        Please advise
        Thanks Jesse
        • Hi,

It works. I use the V1 with the USB on my ground station and the V2 on my Rover and Plane

      • Should be no difference.

  • I'm quite interested in this too. Looking to get a radio for telemetry and v1 seems to be available much cheaper and in stock. Haven't found v2 anywhere in stock in the UK and costs $40 postage from US...

Anyone know if it is easy enough to connect the the v1 to the Pixhawk?

    • Where do can you find the V1 radios for sale?

  • One thing I know is that the new ones come with the proper Pixhawk cable, and the set includes the OTG cable for tablets.

I put my older radio on another quad. The new ones are really easy to use, too.
