Skycat parachute launcher for Drones

Dear reader,

We are now live at www.skycat.pro. The development project continues, and updates are added to this blog in random intervals.

We have parachutes launchers available in many weight ranges; optimal 1 - 6 kg and these could be extended with higher impact level up to 11 kg. For larger up to 23 kg multicopters we have XL - series with pilot chute principle.

For those who wants to digest all information available of products, we have left this blog as it is. This blog follows closely main steps we have gone through while developing parachute launcher. Blog might feel like Do It Yourself kind and to be honest, in the beginning it was.

After hundreds of hours thinking, designing, prototyping and testing our patent pending launcher turned to be the most reliable parachute launcher for professional use. We have searched all possible boundaries of technology and from this blog you'll find results of these successful tests but also not so successful tests.

You never know where The final limit of technology is without experiencing it. That's the reason why we have done tests for scenarios which might not be even realistic on flight.

For production versions of Skycat we could proudly to say that we have experienced zero mishaps, never failed a single eject and parachute has deployed every time. This includes rescue scenarios with every imaginable scenario copter could face in air. Check this out as one sample of our test sessions!

Skycat parachute launcher has been tested beyond all imaginable abuses copter possibly could experience in flight. We have sink it to water, it has been heated hours to 90°C and exposed to extensive moisture, we have frosted, defrosted and frosted it again, it has been in mud and snow and still it has worked. Same overshooting tests we have done also for electronics. This is not promise you can use our products outside of submarine but we have tested it so :)

This blog will still be updated as well our Facebook pages www.facebook.com/skycat.pro and Twitter at https://twitter.com/skycatpro

Fly safe - Let's keep our copters flying!

  • Now there is new test flight video uploaded to header of this thread. It contains various realistic and difficult recovery situations:

    • Free fall and upside down eject. Copter flipped around immediately and fell like that until parachute dragged it correct way
    • Full speed with Acro (Taranis radio said loiter on video, wrong track in radio) mode towards the wind at 90 degrees angle and below 10 meters altitude. This I flew full throttle and pitch fully front. Eject I hit a second before impact.
    • Low altitude loss of control. Copter were simulated to lean strongly to side and were about to hitt to objects. Altitude was below 10 meters, perhaps even 7 meters
    • Full speed eject from loiter mode and clean landing
    • Eject from hovering copter at altitude of 10 meters
    • Two earlier dual parachute ejects

  • New video is posted.

Lately we have done all kind of flight situation ejects from free fall to full speed with acro eject at few meters of the ground. This video is from free fall and ended to tree. Copter was completely upside down on eject.

  • Has anyone thought of using an arduino nano or micro to control this part so it's not taking any APM space or coding. I mean it could be a bolt on and with accelerometers it should be able to interact with input pins etc
    • Hi Conrad,

There are some discussions on earlier comment pages about automatic eject. I'm not sure if there were Arduino Nano or Micro mentioned but some other chips were.

Codespace was a problem with APM but Pixhawk has more space. Autopilot in general has best knowledge of current flight situation. External system would be nice but in the end when begins writing all specs in order it appears to be very difficult and laborious to make reliable.

      • Hi Henri,

Having looked closely at yor site and system may I ask if it oNLY deploys when the operator uses the switches. I mean is it in any way autonomous? Sensore initiating the sequence when it feels it going wrong?

        Thanks, great work.

        • Hi Conrad,

Skycat is fully manual eject system as default and supports external automatic eject command(s).

When autopilot has automatic eject, you don't have to choose whether you use eject command from autopilot or pilot radio, you could use them both.

You could install as many triggers needed and all of them has own PWM source for eject. 5V eject trigger (or any signal) is also very easy to set up but currently needs some DIY work. We are going to have different "Ready To Eject" trigger options available and will release next version very soon.

  • First milestone is finally achieved; www.skycat.pro is open.

Our first launcher is available today and more is coming soon!

    • well done.

will you do a version for 6mq/12mq parachute ?

      Ciao - Giuseppe

      • Thanks Giuseppe!

We are working for larger parachutes and done prototyping for few different kind of bigger launchers. It is long road to develop it for meeting high reliability requirements.

For larger copters we have recommended dual parachutes. Advantage of dual parachutes is redundancy and also good weight distribution.

One our customer Jani Piispa from Aeria made awesome installation to his HighEnd heavy multicopter. Weight distribution is perfect and appearance of installation is very nice. You find his Facebook pages and photos of copter from here and home page from here.

Note how weight is distributed and especially his really innovative parachute launcher stand!

        Ciao - Henri
