Flying Arducopter indoors

Hi all, I'm kind of in a bind and could use some advice.  I am working on my thesis and am developing a quadrotor for indoor machine learning purposes, and I mainly have access to a lab space that's about 25'x25'x10' tall.

My quadrotor is 39" tip to tip:

I am fairly new to flying quadrotors, I have flown this one outdoors a few times and the AR Drone in our lab with no issues.  I am having a hard time controlling the quadrotor effectively before I get too close to the walls of our space.   I guess my question is, is this space just too small, even for an average pilot to fly it in?  Or do I just need more practice/more time tuning it?  I am hoping to finish all my work this semester, so there is a time constraint.  i.e. practicing flying/tuning outdoors is not really an option.

You probably need a bit more practice. But Keep in mind that flying close to walls or ceiling can cause problems with air flow hitting surfaces or getting sucked up to the ceiling.
