Help me to completed my scratchbuilt twinboom!!!

Hi guy, i have been following Tim MaCmahan's twin boom build thread for a while now, and i decided to build one myself. The airframe is pretty much ready for the power and radio systems, however, i am still undecided on the TX and RX. I'm a rookie in this hobby so help me pick a good TX and RX that are within my budget ($350) please. I am planning to build a bigger one after this one is completed then will turn it into an UAV.

Here are the parts that i have

Motor: Exceed monster brushless 25

Battery : lipo 4 cells 40A 2500

ESC: Exceed 60A

Servos: 9g metal gears ( can't remember the name right now)

TX and RX : undecided not sure what is the best one to get in my budget, my budget for this is $350 ( i am thinking about Spektrum DX6 or DX7 )

here are some pic of my twin boom

  • Try the air team series should fit the budget here is the linkhttp://www.futaba-rc.com/team/index.html
  • i just ordered the DX7 , hopefully i can put it together
  • Here are the system modes i took from Spektrum site for DX7

    System Mode
    Model Select
    Model Name
    Model Type Select
    Model Reset
    Trainer System Select
    Throttle Recovery
Input Select (Switch Select-ability for Aux 2 and Gear)

    Wing Type
    Swashplate Type
    Dual Rate Switch Select
    Timer

" Switch Select-ability for Aux 2 and Gear " dose this mean it has 2 position auxiliary channels ?? sorry im a noob at these stuffs .

thanks again for your helps guys !!!

Cong - if your radio budget is $350 then you can afford to get a good radio. I disagree with Tim a little when he says a two position switch is enough. IMO you should get much better than that in your price range. I prefer to mix a two position and three position switch to get 6 modes selectable. With a good radio you can do this and have channels/switches left over.

I am most familiar with Spektrum and JR, so I would recommend a Spektrum DX7. For $300 you can get one with a AR7000 7 channel receiver and 4 DS821 servos. Look here (you have to add it to your cart to get the low price)

I have tried the DX6i, DX7, and JR9303. There is a jump in programming flexibility as you move up the ladder. The DX7 I consider to be a much nicer radio than the DX6i
  • thank you guy for the welcome and the replies

Is there any advantage for picking this over the Specktrum DX6i ? right now i' m leaning more on the DX6i because is cheaper, and in case i need to add an other RX later on it is less expensive then Futaba .

For now i think 6 channels is enough for me.
Do you mind to elaborate more about 3 position landing gear/aux switch?
I do plan to fly with a camera later on, so is there anyway to make it work with the 2.4mhz system as i'm planning to get the Spektrum DX6i TX

    thank for your time guys!!!
  • Glad to hear about another Twin boom. I'm now workinig on a Version 2. Ii fly on on a JR 6channel rig, converted with a Coraona hack module so I can select 2.4 OR 72mhz. It flies great on either one. The thing to keep in mind is
1- How many channels will you need? (For a UAV, I say the more the better. Did you know the Ardupilot is a LOT easier if you have a 3 position landing gear/aux switch?)
2- What frequency do you want? 72mhz is more prone to noise, and 2.4mhz can be amplified or modified with with WiFi gear. Also, if you plan to fly with a camera, 2.4ghz radios aren't friendly with 2.4ghz camera systems.

Good luck. You have around 11,000 friends to ask for help, so I bet we can get you in the air. :)

  • Nice build ', you could try this one: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=...(Mode_1) that cost 280 USD or this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=...(Mode_1) those RC transmitters is perfect for UAV use or FPV. They also sell a RC booster!
