Input Requested/Help - Flat Foam Wing Example

Being the El Cheap'o that I am, I am wanting to build a wing for my Sky Fly Max using flat sheet foam.  There have been serveral examples posted and all seem to have good results.

I can not recall the name of the type of wing I'm thinking of but the basic construction is the base sheet is cut to the cord needed and a basic air foil is layered on top with additional (but smaller) sections of flat foam.  I am thinking about placing a thin fiber fillament tube/arrow into the layers as a spar.

I have deviated from their example by using a base sheet that 1/2 inch thick and the layer pieces being the more typical 3/16 in flat foam.  The purpose of the deviation is two-fold;

1) I had the foam sheet and the thicker one looks better (more appropriate) as it will provide a thicker wing similar to the one I could purchase for this project.

2) I am Cheap, the foam cost less than $8, fiber tubing is $4 at local supply shop.

3) Build better wing at 1/2 price of stock piece.

Please provide me some assistance with your thoughts as to the preferred air foil.  Drawing below is not to scale.  Cord is 10 inches, thickness is about 1 inch, span will be 60 inches.

PS - What the heck is this type of wing called!

Thanks

  • Excellent, Brian.

    We're all experimenters here, and given the back half of the KF airfoil works on stepped edges, you might just be on to something with the angled leading edge in 'B'.

    Keep us advised on your progress!

    Hey that is called a KFM 3 wing i believe, its a very easy wing to build and its very stable however it is more draggy than other wings, but I use it for some of my models and it works great :)

    However the drawings you posted are not correct on how you would build one.

    The image above shows you some KFM airfoils. The way you make the round leading edge is to cut two flat sections (bottom and top) then you lay them out flat and tape the edge with some packing tape then simply fold them over each-other to make the nice round edge. The foam will compact generally but if its a problem just cut a groove to make the folding easier.

    If you have any more questions i can try to help
