Interference From High Voltage Transmission Lines

Hi Group

I would like to get the groups thoughts /experience on the possibility of electronic problems when flying close to high voltage power lines (obvious application of line inspection).

I was wondering what the potential risks be to on board electronics (rc, radio modem etc etc) at distances of a few feet to a hovering platform?

Any insights would be welcome!

  • I think the only problem your likely to have if any is radio interference depending just how close you get. I somehow ended up with my esaystar the othe side of some power lines and didn't like it at all.
  • Yep, I drilled a nice 50cc aerobatic bird in last month flying near high power lines, just a bad combination of where I was standing, where my Tx antenna was pointing, the "stupid metal fence" where you have to stand behind to fly from (should be plastic net, metal fence is a dumb idea especially when it's as high as your chest) and the 6 buzzing high power lines.

First plane I lost in over 13 years - it's on 2.4ghz too
  • Hi Rory.

I would think a few feet from high voltage power lines your main cause of interference may be arcing, which would be devastatingly destructive.

Perhaps better to screen your electrics with a faraday cage and ensure your chokes/filters are all taking 50-60Hz to ground.

Work from further back with a more stable platform and perhaps a gyro stabilised camera would see my $.02 spent.

    Cheers,

    Dave..
