Islander with with autonomous take off and landing.....

Hi all

Just a quick question. I am currently flying my replica of a b2n islander and as wondering if anyone has had any luck with autonomous take off and landings....as my islander is like my test bed I wouldn't mind giving it a try with this airframe...

I told you it was a quick question

  • Hi Morli

    I just looked at it.
    Impressive !!
"Air-bag" like for UAV landing ....
This idea could be perhaps used for DIY UAV
What do you think about this idea ?

    Cheers, Jean-Claude
  • Hi again Troy,
Your method for take off / landing sailplane looks great
Could you please provide some details on your UAV modified sailplane ?
Like which sailplane did you choose, modifications , payload capacity , flight time ?

    Thanks, Jean-Claude
  • depending on the plane takeoff and landing autonmous can be easy, I know for my UAV test bed I use a modified 2 meter sailplane and for take off i just gave it full power and tossed into the wind, I would then pick up the controler and turn on the auto pilot,(the flights always went great till that point). If the plane survived the flight under auto pilot I would just turn the auto pilot off and have the motor shut off and the plane would land its self. It would even enter ground effect and slow the decent.

My Skybolt on the other hand, The autopilot could fly while in the air but if I ever let go of the controls it would decide for its self where it wanted to go.
  • This might be a n00b question, but has anyone thought of putting sonar sensors on for take off and landings?
  • There are people doing this, but it's not in the mainstream Ardupilot yet.

It's still recommended that you take-off and land manually.
