James F. commented on UAS_Pilot's blog post 40mm retractable camera turret
"I don't think I follow on some parts of the design. What pivots the ball about the horizontal axis? I see how the vertical axis works and I can see how the retract mech. could work...

What is the wedge for? Where does the second servo go?"

James F. commented on UAS_Pilot's blog post 40mm retractable camera turret
"We should keep it simple. Start with a very simple retracting turret for a specific camera size and scale up from there. We just need to have an idea that everyone can play around with and innovate off of or poke holes at."

"If you send me the hand drawings I can CAD it up for you."

"How did you manage to cut CF with a laser cutter? What laser cutter did you use?"

James F. commented on crystal garris's blog post techpod 2.0 progress blog
"What kind of vibration do you see with the thin member that connects the camera to the body? Have you thought about turning that into a torque box or using stringers to reinforce it?"

James F. replied to William Gross's discussion Help with wing and airfoil design
"1) I would base the airfoil off of an existing airfoil. From the looks of your airfoil you will have a lot of lift at slow speeds, but also a ton of drag and large moment. There are many tools you can use to come up with the wing design (x-foil is a…"

"@Paul
I believe the pictures are just black and white. Also, the placement of the yellow boxes would suggest a description of the pictures, however the boxes don't describe the plane in either picture."

"What kind of fiberglass (weight, style, E or S, quantity, price range)?"

James F. commented on Dror Caspi's blog post Quiet, Tilt-Rotor Unmanned Aircraft Is Behind the Lines Spy
"In terms of efficient flight, it will always be better to have the fewest number of motors on during cruise. If its possible to make the rear motor swing down and have EDF on the wings, it would be best given this train of thought. However, there…"

James F. commented on crystal garris's blog post techpod1.0 ready to ship
"Looks like a great little bird you have there. It would be nice to see a more aerodynamic backend though. I'm sure flight times would increase quite a bit with a bit more work on it."

James F. commented on Tj Bordelon's blog post Fried motors
"I wouldn't bother with cheap motors unless you plan on running them way below rating. For the money you end up spending on 2-3 cheap motors, you can easily buy a high quality ARC motor or Neu motor. I have personally flown my 500w ARC well past…"

James F. commented on Shannon Morrisey's blog post New UAV Designs Transform, Cooperate, and Sun Sail
"The basic concept behind the sky base is to have smaller planes which are easy to manufacture come together to create a larger plane that is able to fly at much higher altitudes than any of the smaller planes could by themselves.

This means that…"

James F. commented on Sys-Ak's blog post Crash 4 Sure: integrated Autopilot & OSD
"I don't think anyone will want to buy something that does exactly the same thing as APM but closed source.

The APM is lacking an OSD, so if you come up with a board (or any other way) that takes the IMU data from the APM integrates it into an OSD…"
